KANSAS CITY (34) d SAN DIEGO (13) The Headline: Norv Turner gets to keep his job, unfortunately. The Story: In this divisional game between the inconsistent at best Chargers and the just plain crappy Chiefs, fans were treated to… a game of football. I’m really struggling to pick out the positives here mostly because neither team was overly impressive, the Chiefs were just a bit crappier in the key moments essentially giving Kansas City the win thanks to some big time incompetence from their offense. This game would have been much more amusing to sit through if both coaches had been told before the game that the loser was going to be fired in the locker room after the game. Plus we would have found out how genuine both team’s defense of their coaches has been if they knew one more loss would get rid of the guy. At 10-6 going into the fourth quarter, fans of both teams had to be riveted with this ****-storm of a game (the only polite way to describe it) before the Chiefs decided that they wanted to keep Norv Turner in the Chargers job for the foreseeable future and decided to let him keep his job and win this game with a 21-7 run in the fourth quarter. Key Stat: Chiefs total offense: 289 yards When your team has not held a lead for the entire season so far, there has to be something wrong with your offense in particular. Going into the season there were high hopes for this team, Jamaal Charles was back from his ACL injury, Peyton Hillis was coming in and hopefully over his issues from last season and Matt Cassel, while not an elite quarterback, would have plenty of good targets to throw to for a competent and occasionally explosive offense. Unfortunately, the backs can’t get any traction, Charles ran for 39 on 12 carries, Hillis had 14 on 7, and Cassel had nobody to throw to outside of Bowe leading to a measly 181 passing yards. Key Play: Matt Cassel sack-fumble in the end zone, recovered for a Chargers touchdown It was the closest fans got to a scoring explosion at the start of the fourth quarter, Rivers had just found Malcolm Floyd for a touchdown to make it 17-6 and highly unlikely for a Chiefs comeback given their ineptness on offense. With the Chiefs then backed up against their own goal line, Jarret Johnson came in, hit Cassel and got the ball loose for Shaun Phillips to recover for the touchdown that killed off any chance of an exciting finish to the game (or any level of exciement whatsoever). Man of the Match: Phillip Rivers 18/20, 220 yards, 2 touchdowns Rivers was scarily efficient in this game with only two of their passes not going to their intended target, one of which was intercepted. When your quarterback is able to complete passes at will like Rivers was you are more likely than not to win the game and Rivers did a great job picking his spots to throw the ball.
