Nick Foles, Philadelphia Eagles QB impressed in his debut with the team. But can he be called the future after one quarter of pre-season play?

I’ll be the first to admit that watching the Eagles’ first team play in their first Pre-season game was as entertaining as watching paint dry. They looked pretty bad. Michael Vick was ineffective and the defense looked frighteningly like it did to start last season. The bright spot seemed to be QB Nick Foles who played quite well in the third quarter.

Since Foles’ 144 yard, 2 TD performance, I’ve heard a lot of people refer to him as the future. Things sure move fast in Philly.

Nick Foles did look good. It was nice to see him play and get the chance to begin seeing what the kid is all about. To see him play well was icing on the cake. I’m sure part of the enthusiasm for Foles is about Michael Vick banging his hand off of center Jason Kelce’s helmet and the prevailing fear that Vick will be unable to maintain his health for a full season.

But is Nick Foles the future? Maybe. But can we really anoint him after a quarter of play in a pre-season game? I think not.

While I’m optimistic the kid will be able to get it together and be a factor down the road, the optimism needs to be tempered. Foles was lined up against the Steelers 3rd string defense much of his time on the field. It’s not as if he was picking apart an elite NFL defense.

While I hope he gets an opportunity to play against better competition so we can see where this all could go, I’m just not sure that it’s time to go out and buy a Nick Foles jersey.

At best, Foles’ true arrival on the NFL season won’t come for quite a while. If he continues to develop and play well, he could find his way into the back up role later this season. From there, who knows? A lot of people see Foles as a potential starter in the NFL. Someday.

That day isn’t after one pre-season start against a third string defense. Patience, people.
