If you’re already bored or annoyed by the NFL’s labor struggle, I don’t blame you. But it’s also entirely possible that the Cincinnati Bengals in particular will benefit greatly from one of today’s (supposed) developments. Jason Cole of Yahoo!Sports is reporting that NFL owners and the players union reached an agreement on a rookie wage scale.
For most teams who seem to sign their draft picks without problems and generally avoid extended holdouts, this might not seem like a big deal. But for the Bengals, who attempt to squeeze every dollar out of negotiations, occasionally piss-off first-year players and at times go against the widely-accepted slotting system, this could be good news. If the NFL moves closer to an NBA-style draft system that puts a tighter limit on what teams can pay (and this seems to be happening), the excruciating struggles and holdouts of the past might be eliminated.
The key word here is “might.” With our team, you never know.
But it’s something to think about. And for once, it’s a happy thought.
