One of the more alarming trends in this Bengals season is the absence of a pass rush. According to a stat passed along by Joe Reedy, the Bengals are buck-naked last in sacks with three and have one sack for every 46.67 opponent pass attempts. Quite frankly, that’s staggering. And embarrassing. Most teams don’t throw 47 times in a game, some might not do it in two. So Cincinnati is essentially averaging less than one sack per game. And that’s not going to cut it.
If Cincinnati expects to improve, the pass rush needs to get better. With one of the best cornerback duos in the league, the Bengals should be able to pressure the quarterback on a semi-consistent basis. But it’s not happening right now. And sadly, I’m not too optimistic about an improved pass rush. Robert Geathers has definitely lost a step and Antwan Odom isn’t near his pre-injury form. The only hope lies with rookies Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins. Perhaps those two can develop into pass-rush specialists as the season progresses. Another solution might be to utilize more 3-4 fronts in attempt to confuse opposing offenses. But up to this point, I haven’t seen much of that either. So I’m not exactly optimistic that things will get better.
For now at least, there seems to be no rush.
