When it comes to former Tar Heel Hakeem Nicks things seem to be looking up for the present and future, being a Super Bowl champ and even after an injury being ready to go by the time the Giants go to camp, but not as much for things in the past. Unfortunately for the North Carolina football program, when it comes to the wide receiver’s past, it also means that they will be once again in the spotlight for the wrong reasons. From an article in the Daily News the first sentence of the online reading material says it all…

Hakeem Nicks’ record-setting college career now comes with an asterisk.

The reason is because the then junior was ineligible in his last season in Chapel Hill and was found to have committed “academic fraud”. From what I have read around the internet it seems that the New York Giants wide out could not be reached for comments, however his agent could. And when asked it seemed like Mr. Peter Schaffer did not seem to make too much of this new relevation concerning the UNC football team and his client. Saying first about the situation…

“We have no knowledge of that whatsoever.”

Then adding the following short statement to the News & Observer

“It’s low on the totem pole of relevant issues,”

Before I add anything to this post let me say this… the comment about this being low on the totem pole was something that Nicks’ agent could have truly avoided saying to the media, or anyone else for that matter. While this might be something that for now a NFL star and his agent is basically meaningless, Mr. Schaffer should have thought about what Carolina is going through with what seems an never ending story. And the fact that the wide out or his agent might or might not have known about all of this, which I am not saying they did, the comments should have been avoided. I also will be waiting to hear from Nicks himself on this whole situation, including if he finds this issue “low on the totem pole” or not.

This is not the first time that Nicks’ name has surfaced with problems for the North Carolina football program under head coach Butch Davis. The former Tar Heel, who set both single season and career records while calling Kenan Stadium home, gave $3,300 in improper benefits to players still at North Carolina. Now, after this relevation, all of the university publications, including the media guides, will have all of the records from Hakeem Nicks with an asterick. And while this is all for the wide out, North Carolina will also void all the wins from both 2008 and 2009, which adds up to 16.

In what has become college football’s perfect storm once again there is another hit on the North Carolina football program and ex head coach Butch Davis era. As an old Heel, who (sorry about the cliche) bleeds Carolina blue and has always wanted to see the football program being just as wanted as the basketball one, yet again seeing something like just hurts. For the ABC’ers and the Carolina haters this is a field day, for me this is just time to reflect and to hope that with a new coaching staff all of this stops here and now!
