Since beeker and everyone else seems to be linking A.J. Green with the Bengals at No. 4, I thought I’d provide a counterpoint and a debate prompt. Here’s my case against Green:
1) Jordan Shipley
2) Jerome Simpson
3) Andre Caldwell
And if you expand the idea of receiver to tight end, you can also add Jermaine Gresham and Chase Coffman. As you can see, the Bengals have invested pretty heavily in their receiving corps over the last few years with mixed results. Yes, Green is being touted as a modern-day Randy Moss (the good parts anyway). And yes, Simpson and Caldwell will be eligible for free agency next year. But I saw enough out of those two in the last few games – and I’ve seen enough receivers drafted over the past few years – that I don’t want another one.
The Bengals have bigger needs in other areas. And I understand that you don’t always want to draft for need, but taking the best player available can make you like Detroit in the Matt Millen years. Which was 0-for-16 awful if you can remember.
So even though I don’t want a quarterback at No. 4, I think that might be a better pick than Green. The same goes for defensive tackle. And defensive end. And safety. And offensive line. Well, you get the point.
The Bengals would be wise in not going Green.
