As the Oakland Raiders start their training camp July 30, 2012, every position will have competition. Because the Raiders gave up this year's first round pick and next year's second round pick for him, Carson Palmer will be the starting quarterback, barring injury, when Oakland begins the season. The competition will come from Matt Leinart and Terrelle Pryor vying for the back-up job.

Leinart, who was singed as a free agent this offseason, has the advantage in many respects. He has worked with new offensive coordinator Greg Knapp for the last two seasons when Knapp was the Houston Texans quarterbacks coach. Therefore, he has knowledge and a level of comfort in the system coming to the Raiders. He also has seven years of experience in the NFL and has even made 18 career starts.

Pryor is just really getting acclimated to the NFL this season. Because he was taken in the NFL Supplemental Draft in late August of last year, he missed a significant portion of training camp. This season he has participated in all the Raiders offseason workouts and camps to positive reviews by coaches and management.

“He’s made progress, still a long way away, but he’s made significant progress and the thing I’ve liked about him is his demeanor and the way he’s gone about trying to work and get better,“ Raiders head coach Dennis Allen said of Pryor during the finals days of mini-camp.

Although Pryor is a better athlete than Leinart, experience should sway the back-up job in Leinart's favor. He is an experienced back-up with an understanding of the system. However during training camp and preseason games, keep an eye out for Pryor's development. He may be the third quarterback this year, but in the future the Raiders could need him.
