The Oakland Raiders have signed defensive end Andre Carter. Carter is an 11 year veteran that has spent time with the San Francisco 49ers, Washington Redskins, and New England Patriots. In order to make room on the roster, the Raiders waived 2011 NFL Draft third round pick Joe Barksdale.

“Like I said, it was a long battle,” Carter said of his quad injury. “It was such a long battle, definitely you had your moments of frustration, but I hung in there, I never gave up and I’m just glad to be here.”

The 6-3, 255 pound defensive end started 14 games for the Patriots last season before a quad injury sent him to injury reserve. The 33 year old amassed 10 sacks last year for New England and has 76 in his career. The Raiders have had trouble getting to the quarterback this season totaling just four sacks in three games.

“I just think consistency, constantly attacking your guy,” Carter said of rushing the passer. “I always say in regards to not just being an individual pass rusher, but having four guys that are just nonstop. You see it time and time again from the times when Tampa Bay went to the Super Bowl to the New York Giants back in the day when Michael Strahan played. I watched film on those guys and the reason they were so successful is because they were always in sync. They always communicated.”

The former seventh overall selection in the 2001 NFL Draft of the 49ers worked out previously with the Raiders, but was not signed. This time Oakland did not pass on the veteran pass rusher.

“I was ready the first workout and they saw what they needed to see and they were just honest with me saying, ‘hey, we’re still kind of figuring out what needs to be done, but continue to stay in shape,’ which I did, ‘and continue to work on football type movements,’ which I had been doing before. Did another workout and there you have it,” Carter said.

Carter is in the process of learning the Raiders defensive schemes and playbook. It is unknown when he will be ready to help Oakland on the field.

Barksdale joins cornerback DeMarcus Van **** as Raiders' 2011 NFL Draft third round selections cut this season. New general manager Reggie McKenzie continues to put his stamp on the Raiders organization. The 6-5, 330 pound offensive tackle played in 16 games last season for Oakland, but has not appeared in a game this year.
