After strengthening their shaky defense in 2013 NFL Free Agency, let’s take a look at the Oakland Raiders‘ updated team needs heading into the upcoming 2013 NFL Draft (in no particular order). Quarterback Oakland is among the Top 5 potential landing spots for former West Virginia Mountaineers star signal-caller Geno Smith, and for good reason.  For one thing, the team has the third overall pick, and nine times out of ten, when a team is picking in the Top 10, an upgrade is needed under center. Carson Palmer, 33, is expected to restructure his bloated contract or pack his bags and this could be the right time for the Raiders to give Terrelle Pryor a chance to become the starter.  An open competition is expected in Oakland.  Only time will tell who will be featured in the battle. 2. It was reported earlier today that Carson Palmer isn’t willing to restructure his contract to help the Oakland Raiders. If the Raiders decide to keep Palmer, he’ll account for over $15 million against the cap in 2013.  If he ends up getting released he’ll account for just over $9 million, but the Raiders will save $6 million per Steve Corkran of the Contra Costa Times. Raiders may cut ties with Carson Palmer

"As noted Monday, it's possible that we may have seen the last of Carson Palmer in an Oakland Raiders uniform, as it's "highly unlikely" that the QB will take a pay cut, according to ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter. The Raiders now have three options: hang on to Palmer and pay him his $13 million for 2013, trade him or release him (ESPN)." Carson Palmer...

The good news for the...

Tale of the Tape: DT Vance Walker

The Raiders most recent free agent addition was, Vance Walker, a former 7th round DT taken by Atlanta in the 2009 draft.  Walker, a long shot to make the roster as a 7th round pick, not only made the roster but worked his way up the Falcons’ depth chart culminating in 9 starts last season after never having more than 2 starts in the 3 years prior. The Raiders will give him...

Raiders left tackle Jared Veldheer looks strong. Really, really strong.

Report: Raiders Will Release DT Tommy Kelly On Wednesday

Jason La Canfora is reporting that the Oakland Raiders will part ways with DT Tommy Kelly on Wednesday. La Canfora expects Kelly to draw interest “pretty quickly.” Releasing Kelly will free up $4.8 million in cap space for the Raiders. He signed a seven-year deal worth $50.125 million back in 2008, but has two years remaining on that contract. Kelly would have made $6...

Do we finally have the identity of Jim Irsay’s ‘wopper’?

A couple of weeks ago, Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay caused a stir for most of this team’s fans when he began tweeting about the ogranization zeroing in on a wide receiver. However, there were no inklings from him or anyone else, as to who the receiver was. We supposed it was Randy Moss, as most of the bigger names weren’t ones they could afford. But with no deal in place...

Matt Flynn An Option For The Raiders If They Part With Carson Palmer?

ESPN’s Mike Sando tosses out Seahawks QB Matt Flynn as a speculative option for the Raiders if they do in fact release QB Carson Palmer in the next few weeks. “If Palmer left the Raiders, Oakland could be in the market for a quarterback such as … Seattle’s Matt Flynn? Raiders general manager Reggie McKenzie was in Green Bay when Flynn was there,” writes Sando....

Cardinals rumors: Arizona could target Carson Palmer

With quarterback Carson Palmer “highly unlikely” to accept a pay cut from the Oakland Raiders – according to Adam Schefter of ESPN – it looks more likely that the team will elect to part ways with the veteran. If that happens, the Arizona Cardinals could be one of the teams to express interest in Palmer, according to Pro Football Talk. Interesting: now "highly unlikely...

Cardinals Expected To Show Interest in Carson Palmer If Released By Oakland

Kent Somers of the Arizona Republic expects to see the Cardinals show interest in QB Carson Palmer if the Raiders decide to part ways with him in the next few weeks. Somers adds that the Cardinals don’t appear to be targeting a quarterback in the first-round, but could look to add someone later in the draft. “I think all speculators look at need and not the draft board,” said...

Report: Darrius Heyward-Bey To Visit With The Colts

ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports that free agent WR Darrius Heyward-Bey will visit the Colts. Schefter adds that the visit could take place as early as Monday. Owner Jim Irsay tweeted that they were close to reaching an agreement with a receiver, so there’s a chance Heyward-Bey was the player he was referring to. Since being release by Oakland, there’s been almost no reported...
