One of the Commanders' top draft picks was in a walking boot during the first day of rookie minicamp
Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

The Washington Commanders began rookie minicamp on Friday, but second-round pick, Jer'Zhan "Johnny" Newton, wasn't able to participate as he recovers from a postseason Jones surgery procedure on his right foot.

This isn't anything new, as the surgery was well-documented. The odd layer is the fact the foot was declared 100% healthy when Newton participated in his pro day back in April. Either way, the overall sense is Newton is fine.

Newton fell into the Commanders' lap at No. 36 overall, immediately giving Newton the label of "draft steal". Many had Newton in their top-25 overall players. Some even had him top-20. His drop to 36 is because of the aforementioned surgery, most likely.

Newton was the Big Ten's Defensive Player of the Year, last year, and brings an explosive element to an already-disruptive interior defensive line that features Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. Commanders head coach Dan Quinn is coming up with ways to get all three players on the field, which is a very scary thought for opposing offensive lines and offenses, as a whole.

"He's a game-wrecker and he fits what we do perfectly," Commanders general manager Adam Peters said recently on Commanders.com's Command Center. "It's everything that a Commander is, really. Just tough, smart, violent - everything you want. And he's a team captain. So, we were happy to pull the trigger on that one...

"... DQ has a vision to get them all on the field at the same time. So it's not like he's going to be a backup and not playing a whole lot. He's going to get on the field. He's going to play [and] we're going to rotate those guys [in order to] keep those guys fresh so they [can] get after it, too."
