The quarterback competition is getting all the attention at the Arizona Cardinals training camp. The battle at cornerback is equally intense. Patrick Peterson has one cornerback spot nailed down. The other is the only position up for grabs on a defense that is considered the strength of the team. Among the candidates are Greg Toler, who missed all of last season with a torn ACL, free agent signee William Gay, former starter A.J. Jefferson and promising rookie Jamell Fleming. Michael Adams, a special teams standout who saw considerable time at the nickel position, is in the mix as a possible backup. ''There's going to be a player or two that we're going to have to release that's going to be able to play for another team,'' coach Ken Whisenhunt said Thursday. ''That's not something that we've always faced in the last few years, but we'll see how it all pans out.'' There have been many times in past seasons, Whisenhunt noted...

Arizona's Peterson still honing his CB skills

It sounds strange to say Patrick Peterson could have a breakthrough season this year. After all, the spectacular Arizona Cardinals cornerback returned four punts for touchdowns, one a 99-yard game winner, and made the Pro Bowl as a rookie kick returner last season. But he knows that his biggest value to the Cardinals will be as a shutdown cornerback, and he learned a year ago that...

A lawsuit filed in Oakland (Mich.) County Circuit Court alleges that reserve Cardinals defensive end Ronald Talley injured a man by smashing a champagne bottle over his head at a suburban Detroit bar on March 26. Talley, a Detroit native, was signed to the Cardinals practice squad in November 2010 and signed a futures contract in January 2011. He was originally signed as a rookie...

Wells, King sidelined after failed physicals

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Cardinals fans received a mild surprise when training camp began at Northern Arizona University on Tuesday. Running back Beanie Wells (knee) joined tight end Jeff King (quadriceps) on the active physically unable to perform (PUP) list after failing the team physical. Like King, Wells designation will prevent him from practicing until that designation is lifted...

Hot seat? Whisenhunt knows it's all about wins

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. -- Does Ken Whisenhunt deserve to be on the hot seat? In a logical, rational world, no. Whisenhunt has already taken the Cardinals to the playoffs twice and the Super Bowl once. In the Cardinals 19 previous seasons in Arizona, they had made the playoffs just once. The sixth-year coach has a 4-2 postseason record, has had just one losing season in his previous five...
