ESPN’s Adam Schefter has reported that defensive end Osi Umenyiora has agreed to a two-year $8.5 million dollar deal with the Atlanta Falcons. The deal includes $5 million dollars in guaranteed money with a maximum value of $12 million. The 34-year-old was drafted by the Giants in 2003 and has played for them ever since. Earlier in the offseason, Atlanta released defensive end John Abraham, 34, after he led the team with 10 sacks in 2012. Umenyiora finished with six sacks last season. But overall, Umenyiora has been pretty good. Here are his career statistics: Sacks: 75 Forced Fumbles: 32 Fumble Recoveries: 13 Combined Tackles: 376 But the defensive end has been on the decline for the last three years. In 2010, Umenyiora had 11.5 sacks, 10 forced fumbles, and 48 combined tackles. In 2011, Umenyiora only played in nine games due to an injury. This past year, Umenyiora had six sacks, two forced fumbles, and 43 combined tackles. Umenyiora is the third major free agent the Falcons have signed this offseason. After hearing that tight end Tony Gonzalez would return, Atlanta signed top running back Steven Jackson. But coming into the offseason, the Falcons needed more help on defense, than offense. Atlanta allowed 1,971 rushing yards last season which was good for 21st in the NFL. They also allowed 4.8 yards per carry which put them at 29th in the NFL in terms of yards allowed per carry on average.  The Falcons allowed 16 rushing touchdowns, which put them at 24th in the NFL, and allowed 123.2 rushing yards per game on average, which put them at 21st in the league. In terms of sacks, Atlanta finished with 29, which ranked them at 28th in the NFL. The 2003 second round draft pick is on the decline, but brings experience and similar skills as Abraham to Atlanta. Over his career, Umenyiora has been named to two Pro Bowls (2005,2007), two All-Pro teams (2005,2010), and won two Super Bowl in New York (2008, 2012). Follow me on twitter: @MrLauterbachXLJ
