I won’t call 281 rushing yards and a 4.1 per carry average to go with four touchdowns a tough start, but, I’ll say that Adrian Peterson hasn’t been the fake game’s number one back through three weeks which is where we all had him pegged on our draft boards. Regression to some extent was expected, given that no one has ever followed up a 2000 yard season by keeping pace. Again, he’s the third best scorer at his position behind LeSean McCoy and Jamaal Charles who have both started incredibly hot and the fact that he’s rushing for good numbers in a Vikings offense that is otherwise nonthreatening continues to be commendable. Most would agree, however, that he hasn’t quite looked himself. After his 78 yard scamper to open the season against the Lions the back they call All Day has been pedestrian. Since then, his YPC has been under three. Despite that, he remains a must start RB1 commodity and would be so all season based on volume and talent regardless. There is good news on its way, though. Through the first three games Peterson has been without FB Jerome Felton. Banished this summer for a violation of the league’s substance abuse policy Felton is back in uniform and ready to go and Peterson is looking forward to having him on the field. Last year he was recognized as a Pro Bowler for his contributions to the Minnesota run game but so far in 2013 he’s been on the sidelines. Last season Felton graded as Pro Football Focus’ 4th best run blocking full back. This year Peterson has been running behind Zach Line a rookie undrafted free agent who grades as one of the worst run blockers on the team through three games. While Felton can’t open up holes on his own, he has shown he can effectively lead the way for Peterson. In 2012 he played the 5th most snaps of pure blocking fullbacks and helped pave the way for one of the best seasons by a Running Back of all time. It may not make a world of difference, but with Felton back in the lineup expect that YPC number to start inching upward. If he can lead the way to the second level we could be in for more of the vintage Adrian Peterson touchdown runs we have been treated to in the past.
