Mike Montgomery's year-long transition to a 3-4 defensive end has ended. The Packers cut the sixth-year pro along with safety Matt Giordano on Friday afternoon. The Packers selected Montgomery in the third round of the 2005 draft, and for his first four seasons he was a backup defensive end in their 4-3 scheme. When they switched to a 3-4 defense last year, he appeared to be out of job as an end-outside linebacker 'tweeer. He nevertheless re-signed with the Packers and made the final roster, but then played in only 10 games as a backup and finished with only two tackles for the season. The Packers signed Giordano in Week 3 last year after cutting safety Aaron Rouse. He played in only five games, mostly on special teams.-- Pete Dougherty, pdougher@greenbaypressgazette.com
