Adrian Peterson is on the precipice of history. The Minnesota Vikings' All-World running back needs 102 yards to eclipse the 2,000 mark, and 208 yards to break Eric Dickerson's NFL record of 2,105.

Despite a ton of admiration, the Green Bay Packers -- his Week 17 opponent -- don't want to be on the wrong side of the record books.

"I mean, I respect Adrian Peterson a lot," said cornerback Sam Shields, via the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. "He's a great running back. But he's a big threat. We need to stop him."

On any other day, many Packers players would be rooting for Peterson. But not Sunday, when the two teams meet in Minneapolis.

"If anybody deserves to get the record, it's definitely AP. No doubt about it," said cornerback Tramon Williams. "But unfortunately, they're playing us. We want to put our best foot forward. It's going to be a tough task. We know that already."

"He's a great guy. I've gotten to know him outside of football," linebacker Clay Matthews said. "You'd love to see a guy who has worked so hard and has overcome so much to win that crown -- but ultimately that is against our defense. I don't think any of us want to see that happen. We'll do our best to try and contain him."

The upcoming tilt goes beyond Peterson's quest; each club has a lot on the line. The Vikings (9-6) would wrap up a wildcard spot with a win, whereas the Packers (11-4) are fighting for a first-round bye. Though it went unsaid, Green Bay probably is looking to exact revenge on Peterson, who shredded them for 210 yards in Week 12.

With so much at stake -- individual or otherwise -- this matchup has my early vote for game of the week.
