Vince Young went 30-17 as the starting quarterback for the Tennessee Titans
Ted Thompson couldn’t stop gushing over Vince Young in the weeks leading up to the 2006 draft. ”The more I watch him now, the more I realize that I haven’t seen anyone quite like him,” said Green Bay’s normally low-key general manager. “Usually, when you’re scouting a player, you think to yourself, ‘He reminds me of so-and-so.’ But in this case, Young doesn’t remind me of anyone. He seems to be one of a kind. The more I watch him, the more I just scratch my head and wonder how he did that.” It took seven years, but Thompson may finally get his man. The Packers worked out the veteran quarterback on Monday.
A lot has obviously changed since Thompson uttered that quote. Young was drafted third overall by Tennessee, led the team to 30 wins in 47 starts over five seasons and played in a pair of Pro Bowls. He was also released by two teams and involved in numerous off-the-field incidents. Suffice it to say, the Vince Young who worked out for the Packers on Monday is a far cry from the Vince Young who almost single-handedly beat USC in the Rose Bowl and had GMs like Thompson salivating over his potential.
But the Packers aren’t interested in the 2006 version of Young. With current backups Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman failing to impress in training camp, the 2010 version of Young would suffice. That’s the player who compiled a 98.6 passer rating in nine starts for Tennessee. An injury and an altercation with coach Jeff Fisher ended his season in November and his career with the Titans a few months later.
If healthy, motivated and focused, Young would give the Packers a backup quarterback capable of winning games. So will he sign a contract with the team? A lot will depend on his workout, but there’s more to it than that. While Thompson is obviously still intrigued, you have to wonder how star Aaron Rodgers and coach Mike McCarthy would feel about adding such a polarizing figure to the quarterback room. My hunch is that Young will leave without a deal. But after a week of watching Harrell short-arm passes and Coleman make ill-advised decisions, you just never know. Hey, stranger things have happened.

After a Monday workout, Vince Young joins Graham Harrell and B.J. Coleman in the battle to be Aaron Rodgers' backup. Barring another roster move, it will be up to Mike McCarthy to juggle playing time and practice reps for four quarterbacks.
Vince Young needs a paycheck, and the Green Bay Packers might be a team willing to give it to him. Facing serious financial issues, Young cannot be picky about the team he gets a job with. Nobody is looking for him to compete for playing time, and the Packers certainly won’t be looking at Young as an option to lead their offense with Aaron Rodgers under center. However, the backups...
