Aaron Rodgers and Josh Sitton are two of the Packers “blue chip” players. Now that my fellow staff members and I have completed our annual player evaluations and report cards, I thought it might be fun to take a look at the Green Bay Packers’ impact players. Taking a page from Michael Lombardi, former NFL Network analyst who now works in the front office for the Cleveland Browns, I have categorized the players into representational colored chips. I’ve added a couple more categories beyond the usual blue and red chips, but for the latter groups, I have taken some of the qualifications as used by Lombardi. While some players might have fallen short of their expectations this past season, I have attempted to look at their entire body of work and where they stand going into 2013. One thing I did notice in this exercise was the lack of playmakers on the defense, which Ted Thompson, Mike McCarthy, and Dom Capers need to work on correcting. Feel free to chime in with any agreements, disagr...

Packers Safety Morgan Burnett: More Valuable Than We Think?

Burnett offers a lot of promise for a young Packers secondary (Photo from the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel) In looking at the Pro Football Focus grades for Green Bay Packers safety Morgan Burnett’s 2012 season, something stood out to me.  The longest pass that he was charged with this past season was 27 yards.  It’s never good to give up long pass plays and a 27 yarder is nothing...

Packers Notes: Bryan Bulaga, A.J. Hawk, Evan Dietrich-Smith & Chris Canty

Bryan Bulaga According to Bob McGinn of the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the Packers may try to move OL Bryan Bulaga to left tackle in next season. Bulaga has played right tackle since entering the league, but the Packers appear to be looking for an upgrade Marshall Newhouse. “I think he’s an all-pro right tackle,” said head coach Mike McCarthy of Bulaga. “I thought he was...

Report: Finley won't take pay cut if asked

If the Green Bay Packers plan to ask tight end Jermichael Finley to take less money for next season, that topic will apparently be a nonstarter. "I'd have to walk, for sure, meaning I couldn't take a pay cut," Finley told ESPN's Josina Anderson. "Maybe I'd restructure if it's a deal that I like and it makes sense, but I'm not the guy that&...

Are Packers willing to add free agents?

It's still early in the NFL offseason, but the Green Bay Packers' roster has gotten younger in a hurry. During the past month, the team has cleared out its three oldest players with the release of Charles Woodson and the retirements of Donald Driver and Jeff Saturday. The Packers now have only two players signed for the 2013 season who are over the age of 30: defensive lineman...

Packers' Jermichael Finley won't take a pay cut

Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley has the third-highest salary cap number on the team for 2013, and is willing to restructure his contract, as long as it doesn't include a pay cut. Head coach Mike McCarthy wants him back, and Finley wants to come back.

Jermichael Finley is unwilling to take a pay cut

Green Bay Packers tight end Jermichael Finley told ESPN’s Josina Anderson that the Packers haven’t told him anything yet regarding his future. “The Packers are barely talking to me right now. I know they’re just doing it the Packer way and playing it close to the vest.,” said Finley. “I haven’t got a call. I haven’t got a text asking me to take a pay cut or to restructure...

Green Bay Packers Should Splurge and Sign Chris Canty

The Green Bay Packers are normally very quiet during the NFL free agency. They concern themselves with re-signing their own guys. The players they have drafted and developed and have earned a second contract with the team. Those are the players championship teams are built with and those are the players Green Bay spends money on. Head coach Mike McCarthy had this to say when asked...

2013 Packers Position Group Analysis: Safety

Burnett returns as a leader of both the safety group as well as the Packers team as a whole in 2013 Packers Safeties:  One of the youngest groups on the current Green Bay Packers roster, this is a position that is expected to take a big step forward in 2013.  The team will be without long-time veteran Charles Woodson and will rely on Morgan Burnett to assume that leadership role...

Mike McCarthy: I don’t want to hear that the Packers are Soft

The Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy believes in his team just as any coach should. But with a shaky defense all season, many wondered and questioned whether the Packers are a tough team. And after allowing 45 points and 500+ yards to the San Francisco 49ers in the playoffs, many are convinced the Packers are just a passing team with no physicality on either side of...

Mike McCarthy: 2012 Green Bay Packers Evaluation and Report Card

Mike McCarthy 1) Introduction:  Entering 2012, Mike McCarthy was riding high as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. He won a Super Bowl in 2010 and followed that up with a 15-1 season in 2011.  It was the most successful two-year stretch the Packers have had since the 1996 and 1997 seasons.   Despite the stunning finish in the loss to the Giants in the playoffs, many expected...

Packers DT Johnny Jolly Reinstated From Suspension By The NFL

The NFL has reinstated defensive lineman Johnny Jolly from suspension this week. Jolly tweeted out a letter informing him he is able to seek employment in the league again. The Green Bay Packers retain the rights to Jolly, who has not played in three years following a series of arrests for possession of codeine. In June, Jolly told the National Football Post he had been sober...

Packers May Try OT Bryan Bulaga At Left Tackle

The Packers will spend the next six months deciding if they're better with Newhouse at left tackle, Bulaga at right tackle and Don Barclay backing up or Bulaga at left tackle, Barclay at right tackle and Newhouse backing up. If Derek Sherrod is able to resume his career after a year's absence from a broken leg, the former first-round draft choice could improve enough to...

Packers 'Torn' On What To Do With TE Jermichael Finley

The Packers remain torn about the future of polarizing tight end Jermichael Finley. Sources indicated that GM Ted Thompson and the coaching staff appear to favor keeping Finley, while other people within the organization, including members of the personnel department, favor his release. Sources said the Packers were determined to dump Finley when his play at midseason was erratic...
