GREEN BAY, Wis. -- For a general manager like Ted Thompson, these are the types of days to look forward to.
On Monday, the NFL awarded the Green Bay Packers four compensatory draft choices. For Thompson, who has built the current Packers' roster almost entirely through the draft, this means four more opportunities to build upon a 15-1 team last season that is also just one year removed from winning the Super Bowl.Green Bay will have back-to-back picks at the end of the fourth round, Nos. 132 and 133 overall. Also, the Packers will add two seventh round picks, Nos. 241 and 243.According to the NFL's policy for compensatory draft choices, "a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks. The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four."The formula for determining these picks is based on salary, playing time and postseason honors of the players that a team lost and signed in free agency. However, not every free agent is covered by this rule.Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. The formula was developed by the NFL Management Council. Not every free agent lost or signed by a club is covered by this formula. For the Packers, they did not sign any free agents that qualified. However, Green Bay lost offensive lineman Daryn Colledge, fullback Korey Hall, running back Brandon Jackson, defensive end Cullen Jenkins and offensive lineman Jason Spitz.Since the compensatory draft picks policy began in 1994, the Packers have been awarded the second-most with a total of 30. That is tied with Dallas and second only to Baltimore.Follow Paul Imig on Twitter.

Did Hargrove get paid extra for this hit?
In a further sign that the apocalypse may actually occur in 2012, the Green Bay Packers have waded into the free agency waters with Ted Thompson at the controls.
As someone who prefers to mainly build through the draft, Thompson largely bypasses the free agency period but with center Scott Wells leaving for the St. Louis Rams, Thompson was...

Defensive Backs Charles Woodson, Nick Collins, Charlie Peprah
Packers Defensive Backs: We’re back with the third of this series where we examine each Packers position group as it currently exists. Today we finish the defensive side of the ball by examining the Packers’ secondary. As before, this article will examine three main points from the Packers’ perspective: where we...
Green Bay Packers Surprisingly Active in Free Agency
In his first year as Green Bay Packers General Manager (2006), Ted Thompson grabbed Charles Woodson and Ryan Pickett via free agency. Neither appeared to be a stud at the time—the Oakland Raiders thought Woodson was breaking down—but adding two starters to a team that had gone 4-12 was a step in the right direction.
In the five years that followed, Thompson’s free agents were...

Packers Awarded Four Compensatory Picks for 2012 NFL Draft
The NFL has finally announced the awarding of compensatory picks for the 2012 draft. A total of 32 compensatory selections were given to 15 teams, with the Green Bay Packers receiving the maximum four picks. Also earning the maximum amount were the New York Jets and Cleveland Browns.
Two of Green Bay’s four selections come in the fourth round (no. 132 and 133), while the other...
Anthony Hargrove Headed to Green Bay Packers
ESPN Milwaukee is reporting that Anthony Hargrove is headed to Green Bay. Hargrove’s Tweet:
Play with Pickett when he was a Ram. Going to be great playing with him again…
The 272-lb. defensive end may seem too small for the position in a 3-4, but generally if a player has success at both end and tackle in a 4-3 they can handle the end responsibilities in a 3-4. When he earned...
NFL Free Agency 2012: Jeff Saturday Called Peyton Manning About Decision to Packers
Jeff Saturday joined Peyton Manning and many other former Colts to have left the rebuilding franchise. A couple of days ago, the Pro Bowl center called Manning about his decision to sign with the Green Bay Packers. Saturday told Manning that heading to Green Bay would have been a better fit for him than joining him in Denver with the Broncos. "Peyton is a close friend and...
Clay Matthews is Way More Than Just Hair
Now, you can’t tell me that during your Sunday sports coma you haven’t noticed the cheesehead linebacker with the flowing golden mane and arsenal of fancy footwork. Clay Matthews, #52 on the Green Bay defensive line, has been bringing in some big numbers and drawing a lot of attention. I can tell you one thing: it’s not just his dance moves.
Matthews by the Numbers...
Digging into the Packers blueprint under Ted Thompson
I was astonished to read something about the Packers at ESPN today. Regarding the signing of Jeff Saturday it is notable that the veteran center for Peyton Manning is the first unrestricted free agent signing for the Packers in three years. That led me to do some more digging and I found that the Packers are so proud of the way that their team is built that they have a “How The...

Kuhn Traveled Extra Miles To Pursue Passion
NC State's Markus Kuhn, who was born in Germany, has the size, athletic ability and love of the game to appeal to the Packers, who needed a defensive end before Mike Neal's suspension. Kuhn, who will 26 in May, is one of the most underrated players in the draft and is a midround prospect.
Path to Draft 8: MSU's Saulsberry
Jeff Saturday was a great addition but he does nothing to address the long-term needs at center. Mississippi State's Quentin Saulsberry is the Packers' kind of lineman, with starts at four positions during his career.

The Packers signed free agent center Jeff Saturday this week to replace the departed Scott Wells. Yes, I said the Packers signed a free agent. A free agent that I actually heard of, nonetheless.
