Packers Release Quarterback Alex McGough

Alex McGough, the reigning USFL MVP who led a come-from-behind victory over the Seahawks in Saturday’s final preseason game, has been released by the Green Bay Packers.

Jordan Love and Sean Clifford will be atop the depth chart but the Packers will need a third quarterback on the practice squad. That could be McGough, who took advantage of a full quarter of playing time vs. Seattle.

“It’s not up to me,” he said after the game. “I control what I can control, and I think my practice actions are what they’re going to go off of. Whatever decision they make is up to them. I’m going to roll with whatever. I’d obviously love to stay here. I love this offense, I love the guys here, and I just think it’d be awesome, but we’ll see what happens.”

McGough entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick by Seattle in 2018. He’s bounced around, including an additional stint with Seattle and a championship season in the USFL. The Packers signed him just before the start of training camp. He quickly nudged aside Danny Etling to be the No. 3 throughout training camp.

“I think I’ve done some good, I’ve done some bad, I’ve done some indifferent,” he said. “What I can control is my next action. I think that’s how I focus on it. They’re going to make a decision but that certainly was a good way to end it and put a nice stamp on it. I thought I did – I just did it. I don’t know how to explain it.”

Against Seattle, the Packers trailed by three points when McGough hit Jadakis Bonds for 52 yards and converted a third down with a pass to Cody Chrest before running back Nate McCrary punched it in for the go-ahead score.

It was a triumphant moment who is entering his sixth year of professional football but has kept fighting for an opportunity.

“I just love it,” he said. “I love playing. I love playing and I love the bonds you make with people from different backgrounds, with different experiences. They might be Miami or California but we all connect to make one beautiful team. I just think that’s really what makes me go. Playing football, the rush, you can’t create it, you can’t make it up.”
