Phillip Merling was once a high pick of the Miami Dolphins, going with the 1st selection of the 2nd round in 2008, 32nd overall. However, Merling could never establish himself in a crowded rotation in Miami and never seemed to be comfortable anywhere in their 3-4. They cut him this offseason and today he found someone to take a flier on him, the Green Bay Packers. It’s no secret the Packers needed defense this offseason. They did very well to address their defensive needs through the draft, but another defensive player couldn’t hurt. Merling still has some upside and if anyone can get it out of him, it could be Dom Capers and the Green Bay Packers, even though Merling has never fit a 3-4 scheme. He could see action for the Packers in a situational role on the defensive line, where they need help. He could just as easily be cut in preseason. I would assume his contract reflects this and doesn’t have a lot of guaranteed money.

Latest news and highlights from Dolphins OTA practices

The Miami Dolphins held their first Organized Training Activity on Tuesday.  This OTA was ‘voluntary’ and brought both rookies and veterans together.  We say ‘voluntary’ because while they are technically voluntary, it’s frowned upon if players miss them.  The Dolphins had excellent attendance, with every eligible player participating on Tuesday.  A few players (Massam and [...]

Dolphins have what they need to replace Brandon Marshall

Getty Images The Miami Dolphins are going back to the drawing board and, this time, hope to institute a much more diverse approach to their offense with the possibility of rotating wide receivers in and out of the lineup (even on a play to play basis) and having no focus on one individual star. For the past two seasons the Dolphins relied heavily on Brandon Marshall to carry their...

Dolphins will likely start Matt Moore as long as he wins

Getty Images According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Miami Dolphins will handle their quarterback situation the way the Tennessee Titans did last season with Matt Hasselbeck and Jake Locker. As long as Moore wins, he’ll be the starter. “They’ll continue to play Matt Moore as long as he’s producing & winning,” said Schefter per Evan Silva. Moore had the Dolphins...

Don't look for the Dolphins to sign a big name WR

The Dolphins receiving might be one of most lackluster grouping of average receivers in the league but Joe Philbin and Jeff Ireland seem to believe otherwise.  While it’s hard to argue that the Phins receiving core is any better than the leagues 25th best, it doesn’t appear likely that they will be adding another free agent receiver. NFL.com recently put out an article saying...

Miami Dolphins Should Change Tune and Work Out Plaxico Burress

The Miami Dolphins are headed into OTAs with no stand out wide receivers after trading Brandon Marshall to the Chicago Bears. Regardless of which quarterback starts the 2012 NFL season between Matt Moore, David Garrard or Ryan Tannehill, they have no clear cut No. 1 options at their disposal. That is why Miami should change their tune on free agent wide receiver Plaxico Burress and...

Dolphins starting quarterback to be decided in Preseason

According to Head Coach Joe Philbin, the Dolphins will be selecting their starting quarterback in the preseason, before week 3, so they can get their starter a full preseason game of reps. The Dolphins are choosing between incumbent Matt Moore, veteran free agent acquisition David Garrard, and #8 overall pick Ryan Tannehill. Matt Moore was the predicted starter by owner Stephen Ross...

Miami Dolphins Fantasy Football Outlook

It’s never too early to talk fantasy football. While hopefully I can begin to cure my fantasy football addiction shortly by starting to form and research on player rankings, for now its time to take an early look at some Dolphins players that might have some fantasy implication. The Dolphins aren’t really considered one of the major contributors to the fantasy world, the might...

The Green Bay Packers Take A Chance on Phillip Merling

The Green Bay Packers have decided to take a chance on Phillip Merling. There is some breaking news today concerning the Green Bay Packers, as Adam Schefter reported recently on his official Facebook page that the Packers have signed free agent defensive end Phillip Merling and released quarterback Nick Hill as well as tight end Cameron Ford. This is interesting news as the Packers...

Ryan Tannehill running with the back ups

Getty Images According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, both Matt Moore and David Garrard took the first team snaps at practice on Tuesday, while rookie Ryan Tannehill rolled with the back ups. By having Tannehill go with the back ups, it enables him to get used the speed of the NFL game. Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin did tell Salguero that a three-way quarterback battle...

Plaxico Burress wants a workout in Miami; Dolphins not interested

One of the few remaining notable free agent wide receivers is Plaxico Burress. He's traveled a long, difficult road since catching the Super Bowl game winning pass from Eli Manning that destroyed the Patriots' undefeated record back in February, 2008. It doesn't seem to be getting any easier for Burress. According to Barry Jackson of the Miami Harrold, Plaxico Burress...
