Forrest Gump said, “Stupid is as stupid does.” If we translate that into an NFL language, we would say, “the Browns are as the Browns do.”

In today’s supplemental draft, the Browns picked up Baylor WR John Gordon, who was dismissed from the program last year after failing a drug test. In his sophomore season (2010), he caught 42 balls for 714 yds and 7 TDs. Pretty good for a guy in his 2nd college year. Apparently good enough that the Browns chose to drop a second round pick on him.

Wait… what? A second round pick?

Yes, my friend, a second round pick for a guy who hasn’t played in a year and a half. A second rounder for a guy who got all of one invite for a tryout… from, you guessed it, the Browns.

Back in May, I caused a bit of a stir among Browns fans for — among other things — opining that Greg Little was a disappointment last year. Despite their protests, I still see the culprit for their passing woes being as much the receiving corps as Colt McCoy, maybe more. A group that leads with the stone-handed Little, Massaquoi and Cribbs just does not frighten me.

With today’s slap of the panic button, it seems that the Browns’ brass agrees.

I know nothing about Gordon other than the info I just cited. He might be good or he might be a bust. But I make no hesitation in saying that dropping a second rounder — meaning they do not have a second round pick next year — is significantly overpaying for him and reeks of panic. Had they waited until the fourth round since there appeared to be minimal interest in him around the league, I would not be banging on them for the move. But a second rounder? That’s just plain dumb.

As Herm Edwards once said, desperation is a poor evaluator.
