It’s surprising to see a franchise with a struggling passing game and limited receivers trade its top receiving threat. But that’s exactly what the Bears did when they dealt Greg Olsen to the Carolina Panthers to join another U of M receiving tight end, Jeremy Shockey.

The move is brilliant for the Panthers. They need big targets for rookie quarterback Cam Newton, and adding two excellent receiving tight ends like Shockey and Olsen is exactly what the doctor ordered. Big targets boost his confidence, and Shockey and Olsen will create mismatches if defenses try to cover them with linebackers.

To be fair, Olsen didn’t fit in Mike Martz’s offense. In Chicago, meanwhile, Roy Williams is the new big receiving target who replaces Cutler’s go-to in critical situations. In truth, Johnny Knox is probably the best receiver in the offense, but Williams will be the size guy in the red zone. Expect his touchdown production to go up as a result.
