The Panthers have signed punter Nick Harris to compete with rookie Brad Nortman.
Harris signed a one-year deal.
The 6-foot-2, 218-pound Harris is an 11-year NFL veteran and played in 11 games with Jacksonville last season. He averaged 42.7 yards per punt. Since beginning his NFL career with Cincinnati in 2001, Harris has placed 239 of his 876 career punts inside the 20-yard line. He spent seven seasons with Detroit and remains the Lions' leader in punts (627) and punting yards (27,073).
Nortman, from Wisconsin, became the first punter drafted by the Panthers when they selected him in the sixth round in April. They wanted to sign Harris as an insurance policy.
The Panthers released long-time punter Jason Baker earlier in a salary cap move.

Because of the uncertainty about the comebacks of linebackers Jon Beason and Thomas Davis, it's a question they won't have to answer until training camp.
But where the Panthers put first-round pick Luke Kuechly will speak volumes about their plan for the coming year.
Head coach Ron Rivera indicated Kuechly could play the middle with Beason sliding out to the weak side....
The Carolina Panthers needed to upgrade the talent around Cam Newton, and while they didn’t immediately address their offensive needs, they ended up with a solid group which should help Newton develop in his sophomore season.
The selection of Luke Kuechly came as a surprised, but it was a welcomed one. Kuechly was the best player on the board and will immediately step into a starting...
How was former Notre Dame quarterback and current Carolina Panthers' clipboard holder for Cam Newton backup QB Jimmy Clausen's day today? Don't ask.
Sadly, there's no visual evidence yet of Clausen's misadventure with the hair stylist. Here's hoping it shows up online soon enough.
It’s safe to say Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen isn’t going to see the field anytime soon, given Cam Newton’s success last season. However, Clausen is still a human being, therefore deserves a good haircut because I’m sure he still kills it with the ladies, even if he doesn’t kill it with his career. SuperCuts recently threw a wrench into his haircut plans, and Jimbo sounded...
Punter Nick Harris signed with the Panthers and is expected to compete with rookie Brad Nortman. Harris was released by Jacksonville after the Jaguars drafted Pat Angerer last month. A 12th-year veteran, Harris averaged 42.7 gross yards in 11 games last season and 37.9 net with 13 punts downed inside the 20-yard line. He has a career gross average of 42.5 yards and net of 35.7.
PFW's Nolan Nawrocki, should have been out of a job after foolishly ripping Cam Newton a year ago. After writing my post about Dallas Cowboys’ rookie cornerback morris Claiborne and how idiotic some people were in trying to paint him as ‘dumb’ because of the fact bthat he didn’t want to take the Wonderlic test, I was reminded of a similar incident that occurred before...
