They say anything can happen on "Any Given Sunday" in the NFL and that's just what happened this week in Charlotte as the 3-9 Panthers took it to the one loss Atlanta Falcons. The Panthers came out motivated and simply dominated the Falcons in the first half.
How dominant were the Panthers? In the first half, the Falcons had just three possessions, just 13 plays and gained just 35 yards. The Panthers methodically moved the ball up and down the field on the Falcons and to compound things, the Falcons offense could not sustain drives which kept a tired defense, and depleted secondary, on the field all half long for the Falcons.
Before we throw the white flag in let's take a look at what this means for the season. The ultimate measuring stick for the Falcons is to be successful this season in the playoffs. That could mean winning one game, two games or winning the Super Bowl. Let's take a look at some of the past Super Bowl champions and some failures they've had in December. Last years tournament winner, the New York Giants, lost in week 15 on December 18th to a Washington Redskins team that would finish just 5-11. The 2010 season champions, the Green Bay Packers, lost on December 12th to the Detroit Lions. The Lions won just six games in 2010. The 2009 New Orleans Saints lost their last three games of the season. Should I continue? The point is that all recent Super Bowl teams have had struggles in December. It's a myth that teams finish strong by sweeping December and then go into the Super Bowl hot.
The concern with the Falcons and this game is the way the Falcons came out and played. They were lethargic and didn't look like they want to be there. The Panthers, on the hand, were motivated and came to play. When you factor in those two things, and the fact that these are professional athletes, the motivated team is going to win 95% of the time. Quite simply this was the Panthers "Super Bowl" and hats should go off to them as they came out and were the better team this week.
Long-term for the Falcons, this game shouldn't have much of an effect other than helping to get our team re-focused. The biggest reason that the Panthers had so much success against the Falcons, other than simple motivation, was the spread option and any team that we play in the playoffs isn't going to have that in their playbook unless the Redskins sneak into the playoffs.
In the NFL, good and great teams look bad at times during every season. This was that game for the Falcons. All you can do is learn from it and move onto next week and start preparing for the part of the season that really matter, the playoffs.
BEST OF MAXIM
FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. The Atlanta Falcons have one of the best offenses in the NFL and some of the best players in the league at the skill positions yet twice in the last two weeks the unit has stalled for prolonged periods.
The Falcons survived doldrums in the second and third quarter of a 23-13 win over New Orleans on Nov. 29, but largely because the defense came up with five interceptions...

For the first time this season, the Atlanta Falcons lost a game that wasnt even close.
While the odds still favor the Falcons to win home-field advantage throughout the NFC playoffs, the task looks a little more difficult after a 30-20 loss at Carolina in which they were thoroughly spanked.
Next week, Atlanta (11-2) hosts the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants, which...
Falcons receiver Roddy White only had one reception on seven targets in Week 13 but he hit the 100-yard plateau in Week 14 against the Panthers. White caught nine balls for 117 yards and a touchdown in the loss.Fantasy Spin:White crossed 1,000 yards for the sixth consecutive season back in Week 12, but he's going to have to keep up this type of production if he wants to reach...
The Atlanta Falcons finally played a stinker of a game.
They don't want it to become a habit.
Mindful of how important it is to go into the playoffs with momentum, the Falcons reported to their training complex Monday to begin assessing what went wrong in their worst performance of the season.

Ahh, classic NFL trash talk. Remember when the Falcons squeaked past the Carolina Panthers in a 30-28 week four showdown and Falcons QB Matt Ryan exclaimed “Get the f*** off our field!“?
Yesterday it was time for the Panthers to tell the Falcons the same thing after they beat up on the Falcons and sent them away with a 30-20 loss.
After the game, Panthers DE Greg Hardy engaged...
Cam Newton and the Panthers controlled every aspect of the game this past Sunday.Newton had quite possibly his best game as a pro.He threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns while adding another 116 yards on the ground with another touchdown. Cam led his Panthers to their first victory over the Falcons since 2009 and showed Panthers fans that they do have a reason to be excited for...
Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy was more than happy to return Matt Ryan’s trash talking words following Carolina’s 30-20 win over the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday.
You may recall that after Atlanta’s comeback win over Carolina in Week 4, Ryan barked at the Panthers players “get the f— off our field!”
The Panthers called Ryan’s behavior “disrespectful” last week...
The Atlanta Falcons went down to the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, 30-20. One of the most spectacular plays came from spohmore QB Cam Newton. Newton had a rocky start to his second year in the NFL but has come on as of late. This 72-yard touchdown was surely a sweet reminder that Cam Newton shouldn’t [...]

Falcons receiver Julio Jones finished with 66 yards and a touchdown Sunday against the Panthers.Fantasy Spin:Jones needs three more yards to hit 1,000 yards for the first time in his career. He's on pace for 78 receptions.
Atlanta Falcons (11-1) at Carolina Panthers (3-9)
I really like using trends to pick NFL games. Not all games have the same weight on a team’s schedule and games don’t always mean the same thing for the teams playing it. This is why upsets happen. However, there aren’t any really good ones in play here, except this. Teams are 49-37 ATS as home favorites after a loss as road...
