As he returned to the Panthers’ locker room following a short weightlifting session Thursday afternoon, defensive end Charles Johnson agreed to talk to a reporter. The initial topic? Johnson’s dislike of the spotlight. Before he could answer, a larger group descended to ask Johnson about his strained right groin and his availability for Sunday’s game against the Falcons. Like it or not, Johnson was unable to avoid the media attention leading up to Sunday’s matchup with the Atlanta Falcons (2-5) at 1 p.m. at Bank of America Stadium. If he wasn’t giving daily injury updates – he has said repeatedly he will play, and is listed as probable – then he was recounting his 3 1/2-sack game at Atlanta last season. But in terms of national publicity, Johnson has gone largely unnoticed. Despite ranking seventh in the NFL with 39 sacks since becoming a full-time starter in 2010, Johnson has never been to a Pro Bowl. His only All-Pro recognition is a second-team mention on Pro Football Focus...

Falcons are Superman Cam Newton’s kryptonite

On Week 9 of the 2013 NFL season, The Atlanta Falcons and The Carolina Panthers will play in the first of their two annual division games.  The Carolina Panthers are currently playing some good football; they have a 4-4 record so far this season, and are playing like legitimate contenders for a wild card slot. The Atlanta Falcons are wounded, and are using their depth to support...

TD dance doesn't impress ex-NFLer

Mike Tolbert scored his fourth touchdown of the season Sunday against Atlanta, and then the Carolina Panthers running back celebrated (above) as only a man scoring a touchdown against the Falcons can. But not everyone was so impressed with Tolbert's celebratory dance. For one, Tolbert can probably expect a strongly-worded letter from PETA condemning his use of anti-bird imagery...

Delhomme says Newton right guy for Carolina

Jake Delhomme thinks quarterback Cam Newton is the right guy to get the Carolina Panthers back to the Super Bowl. ''He's 24 years old and let's see what happens the rest of the year, but I don't think there's any doubt this guy can certainly do it,'' Delhomme said. The team's career passing leader, Delhomme led the Panthers to their only Super...

GIF: Mike Tolbert breaks out “dirty bird” celebration after TD against Falcons

Tweet   Carolina Panthers running back Mike Tolbert rarely disappoints in the end zone celebration department, and thanks to four touchdowns over the last three weeks heading into Sunday we’ve been able to see him do his thing quite often. Against the Falcons Tolbert didn’t waste much time finding paydirt, scoring on a 4-yard run in the first quarter...

Rivera confident Panthers can be a playoff team

Coach Ron Rivera says he's confident the Carolina Panthers can be a playoff team. The Panthers have won four straight games, including a 34-10 victory Sunday over the Atlanta Falcons. The win leaves the Panthers (5-3) one game behind the division-leading New Orleans Saints in the NFC South. Rivera says Monday, ''I think we can be a playoff team because of the things...

Panthers bringing back Hangartner

The Panthers are turning to a familiar figure to help fill their offensive line void following injuries to guards Chris Scott and Jeff Byers in Sunday's win against Atlanta. Veteran guard/center Geoff Hangartner is scheduled to fly to Charlotte on Tuesday to take a physical with the Panthers, a source close to Hangartner said Monday. If Hangartner passes the physical, he'...

Panthers pick up fourth straight win

Cam Newton overcame a shaky start, throwing for one touchdown and running for another as the Carolina Panthers beat the Atlanta Falcons 34-10 Sunday for their fourth straight victory. The Panthers defense picked off Matt Ryan three times and cornerback Drayton Florence returned an interception 38 yards for a touchdown to help hand the Falcons their fifth loss in six games. Newton...

Panthers injury report: DeAngelo Williams, Jonathan Stewart

The Panthers have won three straight and face a struggling Atlanta Falcons team at home this Sunday. The Carolina offense has turned things around and will be getting another boost this weekend. The Panthers are set to activate power running back Jonathan Stewart from the physically unable to perform list and he will be active on Sunday. Stewart has missed nearly a full year since...

Credit Carolina's 'D' for team's turnaround

While Cam Newton and Co. receive the credit for the Carolina Panthers' turnaround, it's the play of a stifling defense that has them sitting above .500 for the first time in five years entering Week 9. A unit that leads the league in total points allowed (96) and ranks third overall in yards per game, knows how to get after the quarterback. Carolina's defense has yet...

Mike Tolbert does Dirty Bird after scoring touchdown (GIF)

I guess it’s still fashionable to mock the Dirty Bird even though that hasn’t been a big celebration for the Atlanta Falcons for a while. After scoring a touchdown in the first quarter on Sunday to put the Carolina Panthers up 7-0 on the Falcons, running back Mike Tolbert celebrated with the Dirty Bird dance […]
