The Panthers took advantage of their priority status on the waiver wire by claiming defensive tackle Kentwan Balmer off waivers from the Seahawks, ESPN’s John Clayton reports.
A 2008 first-round pick by the San Francisco 49ers, Balmer was traded to the Seattle Seahawks last August for a future sixth-round pick. Balmer started a career-high 11 games for the Seahawks, playing both the “5″ technique end position and the “3″ technique. Balmer set a career-high with 43 tackles, but remains without a quarterback sack on his 43-game career.
Balmer will play the “3″ technique for the Panthers, Clayton adds.
The Weldon, North Carolina native and University of North Carolina alum has two years remaining on his rookie contract, which the Panthers have claimed. Balmer is due $622,000 in base salary and an $80,000 roster bonus on the second game of the regular season, with $5,000 in per game bonuses for each game after that ($150,000 total). In 2012, Balmer is due $700,000 in base salary with $200,000 in per game roster bonuses. Balmer also has up to $2.2 million in base salary escalation available in 2012.
