Panthers Report:
The Carolina Panthers knew they were taking a risk by not placing the franchise tag on running back DeAngelo Williams. Instead, the Panthers decided to take a different approach by placing the restricted free-agent tender on Williams.
On Wednesday, Carolina placed tenders on Williams and 13 other restricted free agents, according to Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer. The news should come as no surprise considering Gantt reported last week the Panthers’ plans to place RFA tenders on both Williams and Charles Johnson–two players that were considered for the franchise tag before Ryan Kalil received it.
While he’s expressed interest in remaining with the Panthers, the decision to place the tender on Williams makes it more difficult for other teams to sign him as they would have to surrender draft picks as compensation–unless something changes with the new Collective Bargaining Agreement.
