The Panthers added more competition in their defensive backfield on Wednesday, signing free agent safety Reggie Smith from the San Francisco 49ers. Terms of the deal have been not announced. The 6-foot-1, 200-pound Smith played in all 16 regular season games and both playoff games for the San Francisco 49ers in 2011. He recorded 16 tackles and one interception during the regular season. Smith also contributed on special teams with six special teams tackles during the regular season and two during the postseason. ''Reggie has been on our radar since the beginning of free agency and is a player we think can come in and compete at safety,'' Carolina general manager Marty Hurney said. ''We brought him in for a visit Tuesday and it worked out. He is another player we've added to increase the competition.'' Earlier this offseason the Panthers signed free agent safety Haruki Nakamura from the Baltimore Ravens, another young player who could potentially compete with Sherrod Martin for a starting job. Martin struggled with his tackling last season and that didn't sit well with coach Ron Rivera, who places a huge emphasis on acquiring players who can tackle. Charles Godfrey is expected to be Carolina's other starting safety after signing a five-year contract extension last year. Smith spent four seasons with the 49ers after being selected by the team in the third round (75th overall) of the 2008 draft out of Oklahoma. Smith's best season came in 2010 when he started seven games and produced 37 tackles and one interception on defense and added 14 tackles on special teams. He played in 44 career regular season games with seven starts. He has career totals of 54 tackles, two interceptions and seven passes defensed.

Harbaugh happy to roll dice on Moss

Jim Harbaugh keeps it simple. The San Francisco 49ers head coach doesn't talk much about his job. He drives a beater of a blue pickup truck. He dresses down, not up. And when it came to kicking the tires on a 35-year-old former All Pro and famously cranky wide receiver who was a year removed from the NFL, Harbaugh believed a hands-on approach was the best. Who better to test...

Do You, Vernon Davis, Do You

ESPN’s news magazine E:60 is doing a profile on Vernon Davis and Aldon Smith. Why? I don’t know, it’s E:60, who gives a sh*t? To spice up the segment, ESPN thought of the incredibly contrived tactic of making Vernon do a self-portrait. The potential for shmaltz and dimestore psychology is through the roof. But what will the result be? Would Vernon present himself crying on...

Report: Tape captured bounty offer

Gregg Williams offered cash for hitting San Francisco quarterback Alex Smith in the head during the 2011 NFC playoffs, and also implored New Orleans Saints defenders to exploit previous injuries by 49ers players, according to a report Thursday. Already under an NFL investigation into bounties heading into his final game as the Saints' defensive coordinator, Williams allegedly...

Carlos Rogers Confirms Williams’ DC Bounties

Carlos Rogers was recently on KNBR and he mentioned that while playing for the Washington Redskins the players were paid to hit players hard enough to put them out of a game. Rogers states it started as a pool of money from fines imposed by Williams that the players had to pay and the money collected was given out for interceptions and big plays. Over time it expanded. “It went...

Sox GM's threat to Gregg Williams

Ken Williams, father of Niners' WR Kyle, has heard the Gregg Williams tape where he instructs the Saints to injure his son, and he's not pleased about it to say the least.

Bring Me The Sideways Head of Frank Gore

‘Bout to be another day of pearl-clutching over bounties up in… well, not here, since we view the media reaction as a mixture of knee-jerky bullsh*t and Saints schadenfreude, but probably everywhere else there will be that. The takeaway from the Gregggggg locker room audio isn’t that Gregg Williams is a blood-thirsty monster so much as he is a breathtakingly oblivious derptard...

Jason Brown will visit the 49ers

According to Adam Caplan of TheSideLineView.com, free agent center Jason Brown is scheduled to visit the San Francisco 49ers this weekend. The 28 year-old Brown has played the past three seasons in St. Louis. Before then he started out his career with the Baltimore Ravens. Brown has been very durable, after he’s only missed two starts over the past five seasons.

Spies, lies, and audio tape: Gregg Williams' NFL career likely over

In the National Football League, there is a line not to be crossed, or to better put it: get caught. Even worse is to have solid proof, like someone telling and facts falling in place. In this era of audio and video everywhere, the most damning is when the people hear it from the horse’s mouth. Audio of Gregg Williams giving a pre-game speech to his defensive troops, directing...

Panthers add safety depth by signing Reggie Smith

Yet another low-key signing was made by GM Marty Hurney today as he signed safety Reggie Smith. For those who are unfamiliar with him, Smith was a 3rd round pick by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2008 draft. He started seven games at strong safety for the Niners in 2010 but played behind Dashon Goldson in a back-up role for most of last season. Smith is a very talented defender...

Audio of Gregg Williams' bounty speech before the 49ers game

Here is the disturbing audio speech of former New Orleans Saints' defensive coordinator Gregg Williams' speech to the Saints' defense before their game against the 49ers in the playoffs.During the speech, Williams talks about laying out and injuring the top 49ers' players such as Alex Smith, Michael Crabtree, Kyle Williams, Vernon Davis, and Frank Gore.  Williams...

Bounty problem may reach further than previously believed

When we hear a comment, regardless of its importance, context is everything, and sometimes it takes the passage of time to bring to light the true context behind things players and coaches say. As we all know by now, Gregg Williams was slammed with an indefinite suspension last month by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell. The penalty is the most severe punishment ever handed down to...

Donte Whitner: ‘I think it’s really disgusting’

Donte Whitner was on with Alex Marvez today on Sirius XM and Marvez said that Whitner sensed something was amiss with the way the Saints played the 49ers during the preseason. “I remember sitting on the sideline early in the game and watching the Saints send safety blitz after safety blitz, six- and seven-man blitzes trying to knock our quarterback out,” Whitner said Thursday...

Report: Williams urged Saints to injure 49ers in playoffs

A documentary filmmaker reportedly captured former New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams telling his players to injure specific members of the San Francisco 49ers the night before the NFC playoff game. Williams delivered a fiery, profranity-laced speech urging his club to injure quarterback Alex Smith, running back Frank Gore and wideouts Michael Crabtree and Kyle...
