TEAMS: Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers
The Panthers are sticking with Haruki Nakamura.
The free safety gave up a pair of touchdown passes to Roddy White and allowed White to get behind him for a 59-yard reception in the final minute to set up the game-winning field goal last weekend in a 30-28 loss to the Falcons.
But defensive coordinator Sean McDermott and secondary coach Steve Wilks called Nakamura in Tuesday to tell him he was still their starter.
This is a first-class organization. Week in and week out, we're trying to turn this thing around. We want to turn this into a winning organization, potentially a championship organization. And with those type of errors, you're not going to get there, Nakamura said.
For them to still have confidence in me and look me in the eyes and say, 'We know what type of football player you are. Those mistakes are correctable.' But at the same time they expect more.
The decision says as much about the Panthers' lack of faith in Sherrod Martin, a two-year starter who has become a special teams player since Nakamura's arrival as a free agent. Martin angered management last season with a series of missed tackles in the open field.
There was 164 plays in that game. There were not 163 perfect ones, Panthers coach Ron Rivera said. The guy (Nakamura) had an interception in the red zone. The guy knocked away a ball in the end zone. To do a complete turnaround and shutdown, I don't know if it's warranted.

Panthers’ Charles Johnson almost became a bust in 2012
Carolina Panthers Charles Johnson had 0 sacks coming into Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons with the Panthers as a whole being one of the worst pass rush teams in the NFL. However Johnson exploded onto the scene in Week 4 with 3.5 sacks proving that his flirtations will being deemed a bust will have to wait for a little while longer. Sure, Johnson was a third round draft pick out...
It’s judgment time: Ron Rivera entering crucial juncture as Carolina Panthers head coach
Last season, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh inherited a team that hadn’t notched a winning season in almost a decade. Harbaugh took the same group of players that went 6-10 under Mike Singletary and led them to the NFC Championship. Starting quarterback Alex Smith, who many people called a first-round bust, revitalized his career with the most efficient season of his...
No more "what if" games for Panthers
If you ask the Carolina Panthers, there was plenty of blame to go around for losing in the final seconds at Atlanta last Sunday.
From safety Haruki Nakamara, who blamed himself for the defeat, to coach Ron Rivera, plenty of mistakes were made that proved costly. Even quarterback Cam Newton shares culpability. His fumble that may have turned a first down into a fourth down with less...
Brandon LaFell: “I felt like we could have got that yard”
Carolina Panthers’ receiver Brandon LaFell is still smarting from the heartbreaking loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The upstart target for Cam Newton didn’t feel like punting was the right choice in the waning moments of thier Sunday game. In the NFL it’s a game of inches, and pound of courage, they had the inches, just not the courage. Protecting a one point lead, the Panthers...
Carolina Panthers: Week 5 NFL Power Rankings (#19)
Last week: 19 (+0)
Record: 1-3
Last week, I said they were better than they looked against the Giants and they showed it against the Falcons, leading late and only losing by 2. Their decision not to go for the clincher and go for it on 4th down was head scratching, considering all the resources they put into their running game, and their defense’s inability to stop the Falcons...
Despite pass push, Panthers secondary struggling
The Panthers believe they've found a pass rush. Now they just need to shore up their secondary.
Despite Carolina's 12 sacks on the season - including a franchise-record seven against Atlanta last Sunday - the defensive backfield remains an issue.
The Panthers are giving up 259 yards passing a game. And they allowed Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan to throw for 369 yards and...
Brandon LaFell on loss to Falcons: ‘I felt like we could have got that yard’
Panthers head coach Ron Rivera’s decision to punt at the end of his team’s loss against the Falcons rather than go for it on 4th and less than a yard has been a topic of discussion among Carolina fans this week. The Panthers were past midfield, and Rivera decided to pin Matt Ryan and company deep rather than trying to ice the game by converting a first down.It sounds like wide...
Panthers Preparing To Play Sunday Without Three Starters
For the second straight day Panthers linebacker Jon Beason, guard Geoff Hangartner and cornerback Chris Gamble did not participate in practice and head coach Ron Rivera spelled out the team's contingency plan should the three starters be ruled out for Sunday's game against Seattle.
Reserve Garry Williams will start in place of Hangartner should the guard not recover enough...

Roddy White surprises high school students
Atlanta Falcons wide receiver can be a pretty nice guy. There are various member of the NFL such as his new nemesis Victor Cruz that would disagree with that statement.
But when he’s not offering his sometimes controversial opinions, White spends a nice bit of his time doing charitable acts.

2012 Fantasy PPR Week 5 Wide Receiver Rankings: Top 40
Can Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hartline continue his fantasy success this week against the Bengals?

The former...
NFL Best Bets: Week 5 – 2012
I’m going to admit upfront, if you’re using our picks as a basis for gambling on games so far this season, you’re making a big mistake.
I’ve been a disaster and that continued into week four, as my 1-3 took me to 4-12 for the season.
Tony has been better, but not good. His 3-1 brought him to 8-8 for the year.
I feel a turnaround coming sometime soon here, but you’ve been...
