After three seasons with the Seahawks, defensive end Patrick Kerney has decided to hang up his cleats this off-season and retire from the NFL, according to Danny O’Neil of the Seattle Times. The news of Kerney’s decision was first reported by NFL.com’s Steve Wyche.
Kerney cited “wear and tear” on his body as the main reason for his retirement, although it’s possible that having to adjust to a completely different coaching staff played a small part in his desire to go out now as opposed to next year.
The loss of Kerney will likely change Seattle’s draft plans, although it’s not expected that they’ll spend a high round pick on his replacement. There should be several adequate players at defensive end available in both the second and third round.
