After giving quarterback Tom Brady a very cap friendly contract extension, the New England Patriots are now $25 million under the cap. Having that much money under the cap gives the Pats the flexibility to re-sign Wes Welker, as well as possibly bring in a guy like Mike Wallace. Once free agency kicks off on March 12th, things could get interesting.   Need NFL Tickets? var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; var _CI = _CI || {}; (function() { var script = document.createElement('script'); ref = document.getElementsByTagName('script')[0]; _CI.counter = (_CI.counter) ? _CI.counter + 1 : 1; document.write(''); script.type = 'text/javascript'; script.src = 'http://widget.crowdignite.com/widgets/27484?_ci_wid=_CI_widget_'+_CI.counter; script.async = true; ref.parentNode.insertBefore(script, ref); })();

Tom Brady On New Contract: We All Make Way More Than Our Fair Share Of Money

Patriots quarterback Tom Brady surprising has caught some flak for restructuring his contract, and trying to allow his franchise some cap room to strengthen the roster. Brady who regardless of how the contract was restructured, will still get his money, but also wants to win.  The new deal opens up $15 million in cap space for the Patriots even though Brady will get a guaranteed...

Tom Brady's Perspective on His New Deal

On Wednesday morning, WEEI host John Dennis was hoping to have the recently extended Tom Brady on his radio show; however all he received was an e-mail response from Brady. In the response Brady explained "I don’t want to talk about this on the radio or anywhere else for that matter, Athletes are always talking about money at a time when everyone else is struggling so badly...

Danny Amendola vs Wes Welker???  Would you take one or Both??? Thanks for the submission, you can all send us something Patriots-y here if you want. As for your question I think if Welker comes back it’s probably unlikely they bring Amendola in, but I wouldn’t totally rule it out. I’d say then it comes down to him or Edelmand and I’d prefer Edelman.

Tom Brady's New Contract: Negative, Positive or Disingenuous?

I want to talk about both sides of this big story about Brady's so-called generous contract. I'm not disregarding that Brady has had an impact in the New England area, but fans need to look at this a little closer. The Negative Side Do fans understand that Tom Brady gets an increase in guaranteed money? Brady doesn't have to worry if he's injured because the amount...

Terrell Suggs “guarantees the other 31 teams hate the New England Patriots”

Baltimore Ravens linebacker Terrell Suggs was on The Big Show on WEEI and said he ”guarantees the other 31 [NFL] teams hate the New England Patriots.” He also said that he doesn’t believe the Patriots ”respect anybody.” “The NFL is not very big,” Suggs said. “You think we don’t talk to guys that have played for the New England Patriots, that have been on the New...

Doug's Digs, 5th Edition: Contracts and Free Agents

If anybody thinks that Tom Brady isn't the greatest quarterback ever, then tell me why he is one of the winningest QBs in NFL history, wears three Super Bowl rings, holds most of the records for his position, and still is willing to rework his contract into an extension that benefits the team more than his bank account? His guaranteed money will now be about 1/3 of that being...

Da’Rick Rogers Fills New England’s Deep Threat Need in 2013 Patriots Mock Draft (Photos)

The Patriots are amazing. Since 2010, New England has slowly been rebuilding its entire roster, and they have made made the playoffs three times, the Super Bowl once and the AFC Championship Game twice in that time span. That slow rebuild will continue in 2013. With Tom Brady‘s extension setting a likely end to his NFL career in 2017, we may start to see some urgency in winning...

Roethlisberger Frees Up Cap Room For Steelers

Similar to what Tom Brady did for the Patriots earlier this week, Ben Roethlisberger freed up cap room for the Steelers by agreeing to restructure his contract.Fantasy Spin:Pittsburgh can use the extra money to re-sign free agent wideout Mike Wallace later this offseason. Roethlisberger racked up 26 touchdowns and 3,265 passing yards in 13 games in 2012.

Sports Media Musings: Columnists Gone ‘Cray’

Is everyone alright? I only ask because sports scribes everywhere are producing work that, frankly, is wildly absurd. I know, I know: The quixotic endeavour of  journalism commentary has long been dead. I get that. And somehow, someway, Deadspin has become the voice of reason, leaving major outlets (e.g. ESPN, Fox Sports, and CBS) behind. It started with news that ESPN was hiring...

Quick look at new salary cap numbers in AFC East

The new salary cap numbers for 2013 are out, and it appears teams will have a little bit more room to work with than in 2012.According to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com, the league increased the cap to $123 million, up nearly $3 million from last year. This will give teams a little extra cushion when free agency starts on March 12, and all four teams in the division seem eager to start...
