The Kansas City Chiefs’ house cleaning might be the Patriots’ gain. With offensive coordinator Brian Daboll having been fired in K.C., the former Patriots defensive assistant and wide receivers coach is returning to New England, according to ESPN. Head coach Bill Belichick said that, for now, Daboll will help the team similarly to Josh McDaniels role last postseason, possibly in roving responsibilities. “I don’t really have any further comment on it, but I’ll just put it out there now that we’re in the process of bringing Brian Daboll back onto our staff,” said Belichick. “As soon as we get that worked out, he’ll be part of our coaching staff going forward; similar to what Josh did last year, but without any specific responsibility at this time.” Daboll spent 2012 as the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, and 2011 in the same role for Miami. After coaching in New England from 2000 through 2006, he was first hired away to the Jets by Eric Mangini. McDaniels, who was brought in for last year’s playoffs after being released from the St. Louis Rams, was effusive in his praise for Daboll. “It’s great to have Brian back,” said McDaniels. “He’s a very good football coach. Very knowledgeable. Can certainly and will certainly help us in probably a lot of different ways. Certainly having another set of eyes that have experience and a lot of understanding of our system and how we go about doing things is only a positive for us and can help our football team going forward. I look forward to doing that with Brian.”
