One of the Patriots most under-the-radar spots in free agency in the center position. Long-time starter Dan Koppen is coming off an injury, but he’s a free agent. So is Dan Connolly, who was among the three who filled in admirably this year. The draft is also stocked with interior linemen.
What will the Patriots do?
I explored this topic for tomorrow’s paper, chatting with QB Tom Brady’s best buddy Koppen by phone to do so. After breaking his ankle this past season, Koppen told me, “I feel great,” and he wants to play in 2012 and beyond.
The starter since 2003 is taking a very open-minded, business-like approach to the situation, though. To me, though Koppen didn’t say it, it sounds like he’d like a multi-year deal without taking a pay-cut from the $2.9 million he made last year. And on the open market, he might command that.
