Defensive end Jermaine Cunningham is set to come back from a four-game suspension for violating the league's policy on performance-enhancing drugs.
The team is hoping that he can quickly re-assimilate himself and pick back up on what was shaping up to be a breakout season, but the coaching staff is cautiously optimistic and admit that it make take some time before Cunningham fully reclaims his spot as a top reserve.
"Really, no matter how much a player runs around a track or does situps or whatever, its not the same as when the other 21 guys are out there hearing plays called, reacting to what happens on the other side of the play, communicating, making adjustments with your teammates," coach Bill Belichick said. "Theres just no way to do that other than to do it."
One of the silver linings of Cunningham's suspension was that it allowed other players to get into the defensive rotation and prove their worth. Defensive end Trevor Scott was one of the beneficiaries and showed three weeks ago against Miami that he deserves to receive some snaps by recording two sacks.
Undrafted rookie Justin Francis also managed to make an impression in an expanded role.
"Its certainly a positive for some of the players who get those opportunities," Belichick said. "If they can take advantage of them and use that opportunity to enhance their role or show through their performance that theyre ready to handle more responsibility, its a good thing for them and ultimately it can be a good thing for the team to be able to actually see those guys do it, see those guys improve, watch them get more reps in practice and in the games and get more confidence in them and know that their execution level is higher from that."

New England Patriots: How They Can/Can’t Win it All
Continuing in this series, I’ve got the next team I think is the most logical choice to win the Super Bowl this season; the New England Patriots.
Now I realize that if your pick before the season started to play in the Super Bowl was New England and Green Bay, well you’re not going out on a limb too far. This is why that wasn’t my original pick. But if you were asking...
NFL Week 17 Injury Report: New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski
The New England Patriots have been without TE Rob Gronkowski for several weeks after he suffered a broken forearm. He returned to practice in the middle of December, but has failed to return to the field in game situations as of yet. In recent weeks, there has been speculation as to when Gronkowski would return to the field, after officially being listed as questionable on the team’s...

The NFL announced the 2012 Pro Bowl roster Wednesday. Here's the seven Patriots selected.
Tom Brady
Wes Welker
Rob Gronkowski
Logan Mankins
Vince Wilfork
Jerod Mayo
Matthew Slater
All are repeat Pro Bowlers from 2011 except for Jerod Mayo, who was last selected in 2010. Mayo said, via Boston.com: “It’s an honor to be recognized by my peers, the...
Brady finds a positive in recent struggles
Tom Brady has found something encouraging in his toughest stretch of the season.
He knows he and his New England Patriots can come back from a huge deficit.
The two-time NFL Most Valuable Player had his three lowest passer ratings of the season in his past four games. His 68.9 on Dec. 16 in a 41-34 loss to the San Francisco 49ers was his worst in his last 49 regular-season games...
Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes jokes that he left Santa cocaine and Jack Daniels (Picture)
While most of us left milk and cookies for Santa, it appears that New England Patriots linebacker Brandon Spikes decided to leave him something a little more risque.
Check out this Twitter post that he left on his page:

No one parties like New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski. While the NFL’s best continues his recovery, he hasn’t forgotten who he is this Christmas. Check out Gronk, Gronking it with his brothers on Christmas day. I’m surprised they all weren’t rocking the onesies.-TO

Brady close to breaking wins record
Tom Brady was in his second season as a pro when he won his first playoff game.
Now as a 13-year veteran, the New England Patriots star needs one more victory to break a tie with Joe Montana for most in the postseason by a quarterback.
He'd love to get his 17th on Sunday against the Houston Texans, not just to reach the milestone but to also advance to the AFC championship...
Seven Patriots will play in Pro Bowl, do you even care?
I for one could care less. Who watches this game? It's great for players to be honored with a pro bowl selection but it becomes such a joke of a game. After injuries, etc. there's always a ton of players that get into the Pro Bowl despite probably not deserving it. Andy Dalton played in the Pro Bowl last year. Patriots Look to Improve Playoff Standing
This Sunday is the final week of the NFL regular season and the Patriots (11-4/5-0) host their long-time rival the Miami Dolphins (7-8/2-3) at Gillette Stadium. It is an important game for New England so don’t expect head coach Bill Belichick to be resting or protecting any players by sitting them unless the game is out of control...
Tom Brady, Patriots Must Find Momentum, Mental Toughness This Week to Keep Season From Slipping Away
Tom Brady was ticked off after the Patriots’ win against the Jaguars last Sunday. As he should have been — it was less a game than a poorly executed practice, with all facets of the team playing with a general malaise.
While recent studies have shown that an angry Brady is a terrific Brady for the Patriots, this kind of angry Brady is not. Brady should be praised for getting...
Vince Wilfork: Hard to believe Mark Pouncey's only in 2nd year
New England Patriots veteran nose tackle Vince Wilfork has gone head-to-head against Miami Dolphins center Mike Pouncey a few times. It's felt like more.Wilfork will be up against Pouncey, who is now finishing up his second season, when their respective teams square off Sunday. Patriots To Wrap Up 2012 On Sunday
It’s hard to believe, but another NFL regular season winds down this weekend. Another season of Tom Brady and Bill Belichick will be in the books. What a run it has been. Why not try to enjoy it while we still have it?
As for Sunday, it seems pretty simple. If the Texans win, I think the Patriots treat this week as their bye. As many key players as possible will be rested. There...
