We are now almost two weeks removed from the 2013 NFL Draft, and of course it is time for me to give the Patriots their initial draft grade. I purposely waited a week to write this review, as the emotions and immediate aftershocks are now over. This draft had some normal Bill Belichick behavior (trading out of the first round, and selecting a player in the 3rd round who was rated a 7th round prospect). But all in all, here are my grades for the Patriots draft.   2nd round, 52nd overall (from Vikings), Jamie Collins: DE/OLB, Southern Miss.   The Patriots picked up this selection in a trade with the Vikings which involved the Patriots first round pick. Collins, who was recruited to Southern Miss as a safety, seems to bring some much needed pass rushing help to the Patriots. He finished his career Southern Miss with 196 tackles and 21 sacks. Last season, he was named first-team All-Conference USA. Collins will help the defense in the immediate future, and was a great pickup by the...

Bill Belichick "hates" Tim Tebow as a Player

This morning, Yahoo's Michael Silver wrote on the media frenzy that ensues when Tim Tebow comes to town, and how it is the "Tebowmania" that makes NFL Teams treat him as if he has the plague. In this piece, Silver addresses the recent rumors about Tim Tebow potentially becoming a Patriot because it is widely believed that Bill Belichick really liked Tebow in a pre-draft...

Grading the Draft: New England Patriots

As has been the case under Bill Belichick, the New England Patriots were active on draft day, moving around and collecting extra selections. The team traded away their first round pick to the Minnesota Vikings, receiving four choices in return. New England filled several needs but as you'll find out, not everyone was on the same page in their war room.Jamie Collins/OLB/Southern...

Belichick Turned Down Trade and Took Duron Harmon

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss provided even more insight into the New England Patriots draft picks after watching "Patriots All Access" in the draft room, and he recognized something that many Patriots fans will find very peculiar. Bill Belichick received a call with a trade offer for pick #91 in the draft, which is the draft pick that was originally going to go to the Pittsburgh...

Bill Belichick Recognizes Aaron Dobson’s Basketball Background

If there’s one thing that we’ve learned about Bill Belichick over the years is that he admires players that have excelled in two sports. In the most recent case, Belichick has recognized Aaron Dobson’s basketball background and told the media on Friday that it certainly was a plus in his scouting report, as basketball players tend to have “good hands.” Per the Providence...

Tedy Bruschi tells Clark: Brady is ‘protecting the franchise’

Former New England Patriots linebacker Tedy Bruschi responded Wednesday to Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark’s comments about Tom Brady seeing “ghosts.” The now ESPN analyst said Brady may “duck” and “flinch,” but it’s all because he knows his team can’t afford to lose him to injury.

Bill Belichick reportedly ‘hates’ Tim Tebow as a player

Tim Tebow is still in search of an NFL job, and many have speculated that the New England Patriots would be a logical destination if he is willing to give up on playing quarterback. Bill Belichick is known for getting the most out of players and showcasing their versatility, so some have wondered if the Patriots could use Tebow as an H-back or tight end. According to Michael Silver...

Report: Teams turned off by media attention that follows Tebow, Belichick “hates” him as a player

According to Michael Silver of Yahoo! Sports, it seems as though no NFL teams want Tim Tebow and it might be because of his cult-like following. “He seems like a great guy to have on a team, and I’d be tempted to bring him in as our backup,” one NFC head coach told me Wednesday. “But it’s just not worth dealing with all the stuff that comes with it.” “You don’t want...

Browns thoughts on Terry Pluto, ProFootballTalk, “black boxes,” and draft strategy

Who could be running the Browns today who might get the benefit of the doubt? I think it’s a good question. Sometimes I wonder if the Kraft family somehow divested the Pats, bought the Browns and brought Bill Belichick with them if Browns fans would continue point to failed draft picks like Courtney Brown as proof that the Browns were failing in the present. I don’t know how...

Patriots Turning Attention to Bill O’Brien, Penn State Players as Rutgers Fascination May Soon End

FOXBORO, Mass. — The Patriots’ recent ties to the Rutgers football program are so deep that owner Robert Kraft even joked recently that the team may have to set up a recruiting center on the New Brunswick, N.J., campus. Bill Belichick‘s infatuation with Rutgers players has been well documented over the past few seasons. The love affair began when the Patriots took Devin McCourty...

Patriots’ Versatile Offseason Acquisitions Allow Team to Bring Multiple Schemes, Coverages on Defense

Some of the Patriots’ 2013 acquisitions could bring the team’s defense back to its glory days. Prior to 2011, Bill Belichick was known to run a complex hybrid defense that included 3-4 and 4-3 looks, zone coverages and man coverages. But a lockout leading up to the 2011 season, and a 2012 roster that was full of new and inexperienced players, forced the team to simplify on defense...
