One of the under-the-radar failings by the Patriots came at the end of the first half. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski flubbed a 27-yard field goal attempt, just his fourth miss from between 20 and 29 yards in his career.
Afterward, as a true professional, he talked about it.
“Bad kick,” the former Pro Bowler told me. “Don’t know what else to say. Not a very good job.”
I asked if, at this point, that’s even surprising to him to miss one that short. The kick would’ve given the Pats a 3-0 lead at halftime.
“Yeah, the worst feeling especially a very makeable kick,” he continued. “It’s just disappointing in a lot of ways. … Sometimes, it’s hard to explain what happens until you look at it. Nothing I can do about it now. Just went out there, felt good about it. Just didn’t get the job done, just unacceptable.“
