We were close to all out war with Russia this weekend when New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft accused Vladimir Putin of stealing his Super Bowl ring back in 2005 when the two met. Kraft made the comments last week while speaking at an event. For those that may have missed it, here is what Putin said, as originally reported by the NY Post: Kraft explained the incident happened while Sandy Weill and other business execs were in St. Petersburg. “I took out the ring and showed it to [Putin], and he put it on and he goes, ‘I can kill someone with this ring,’ ” Kraft told the crowd. “I put my hand out and he put it in his pocket, and three KGB guys got around him and walked out.” This telling of the story comes several years after Kraft announced that it was a gift to Putin, something he now claims he was strong-armed into by the Bush administration: “It would really be in the best interest of US-Soviet relations if you meant to give the ring as a present.” (In fact the Soviet Union had collapsed 14 years earlier.)
