The tackles, suddenly, are in focus. Matt Light is surprisingly out, and rookies Nate Solder and Logan Mankins are going to be the bookends. Yes, really. Mankins warmed up at his old college position. As for Solder, it was against the Dolphins that Solder made his debut. He handled pass-rusher Cameron Wake extremely well, giving up one sack but holding his own otherwise. Earlier in the week, he looked back on that performance. “I think preseason kind of had me prepared in that aspect,” Solder told me this week. “Where I was like, OK, this is the NFL, this is what it takes. I don’t think that was ‘my moment,’ but I certainly learned a lot. I was extremely impressed by how well (Wake) can play.” (more…)

An update on Patriots G Logan Mankins: Better wait until Monday

Just left the Patriots locker room following the 27-24 win over the Dolphins, and one important topic is the future of Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins. He went down with a left knee injury early on, forcing more juggling on the offensive line. He took his pants off on the bench, wrapped his knee, and wanted to go back in the game. Coach Bill Belichick wouldn’t let him, however, which...

Mankins moving to tackle?

By Paul Kenyon If pre-game warm-ups mean anything, Logan Mankins will switch from his usual guard spot to left tackle for Saturday's game against the Dolphins. The Patriots are on the field now running through their plays and Mankins is taking the spot at left tackle held for so long by Matt Light. Light was a surprise inactive for the Pats because of an ankle injury. Light...

Light inactive for Pats after pregame ankle injury

Left tackle Matt Light is inactive for the New England Patriots after suffering an ankle injury in pregame warmups. Light, an 11-year veteran who has had a strong season protecting quarterback Tom Brady, was hurt before Saturday's game against the Miami Dolphins. The Patriots are without two other starters for the seventh straight game, safety Patrick Chung with a foot problem...

Patriots release injury report: LT Matt Light and S Patrick Chung are surprisingly out

There was an interesting injury situation that seemed to crop up this morning, as Patriots LT Matt Light worked out under the watchful eye of the training staff. Dr. Tom Gill was out there, so was strength coach Harold Nash, and others. Maybe Light’s gimpy ankle from the Chiefs game flared up. So, how did it all come out? Not good for Light. He is inactive, a surprise twist that...

Patriots and Dolphins kick it off from Gillette Stadium… what’s happening? (3-0 Dolphins)

The Patriots offense received a little shake-up, with Matt Light being a surprise inactive. That meant Logan Mankins would start at left tackle, which is interesting. But, first… the defense. The Patriots came out in their regular 4-3 look, even with Andre Carter being out. Shaun Ellis was the starting defensive end in Carter’s place, and he started fast with a sack. But the...

Halftime at Gillette Stadium: Dolphins 17, Patriots 0

It would be difficult to imagine a worse half for the Patriots. They began the game without LT Matt Light, then saw G Logan Mankins go down with a left knee injury. Yikes. Oh, and the offense punted six times in the first six drives. What a mess. After 30 minutes, it’s Dolphins 17, Patriots 0. Really. Patriots QB Tom Brady is 7 of 19 for 87 yards, easily his worst half of the season...

Miami Dolphins Pick 6: Keys to beating New England

Not every NFL team is on the same playing field. Cameron Wake needs to dominate rookie Nate Solder, redeeming himself from their earlier meeting. There are some opponents that have to either be off their game, or the stars and the moon have to align for them to lose. But that happens in the NFL, which is why they say on “Any Given Sunday.” Or Saturday. The New England Patriots...

Patriots Share Mixed Emotions Over Wrapping Up First-Round Bye in Playoffs

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The Patriots crossed another goal off their checklist Saturday by dispatching of the Dolphins and securing a first-round bye in the playoffs, which has become increasingly important due to their injury situation. Left tackle Matt Light's ankle flared up before Saturday's game, and he was inactive. Left guard Logan Mankins, who started for Light at left tackle...

Huge Patriots comeback clinches bye

This may have been the best possible type of game for the Patriots to play heading into the postseason. Down 17-0 at halftime with absolutely nothing working, the Patriots responded with 27 unanswered points by dominating both sides of the ball. New England won 27-24 despite missing both starting tackles. Guard Logan Mankins started at left tackle,…
