After a dismal year of trying to grasp the Patriots complex offense, Chad Ochocinco finally got his walking papers.

We all knew it was coming; it wasn't a matter of if, but when. We don't think you could find anyone on earth that was genuinely surprised by the news. The true surprise was how long he lasted in a Patriots uniform.

The media darling of TV and Twitter fame recorded 15 catches for 276 yards and 1 TD in 15 games. That's grade school math at its simplest: an average of one catch per game. Terrible. Just terrible.

Coming from a Bengals offense with Carson Palmer at the helm to the complexity of the Patriots system with Tom Brady as your QB was just too much for Chad. The playbook might as well have been in chinese. Everytime we saw Chad on Basketball Wives or tweeting pictures from IHOP, we wondered, in all that he seems to do throughout the day, when is he studying that playbook?

It's been 10 months since he arrived at "heaven" in his words, and this year's OTAs basically showed the team just what he's been doing in his spare time. 'Heaven' had no choice but to show him the pearly gates.

The Wide Receiver position in the Patriots offense is as complex as any position on the team, and it's no wonder that many good WR's have not been able to absorb the concepts and overall offense. Maybe a young Chad Johnson would've been able to grasp it. Perhaps his age had him too set in his old Bengals ways.

Recent reports from the Patriots' OTAs had Chad running a penalty lap for jumping offsides and WR Deion Branch having to show him where to line up on another occasion. That was just not going to cut it with a season already under his belt in the Pats system. So its pinkslippo for Ochocinco.

He actually did the Patriots a favor by showing them his playbook ignorance this soon. He would have lingered into training camp before being cut. His release paints a clearer picture of what the offense will look like going forward. And it wasn't like he was going to beat anybody out for a spot, especially with the additions of Brandon Lloyd and Donte Stallworth to the receiving corps.

The Patriots convinced him to restructure his contract back in March, dropping his 2012 salary to $1 million from the $3 million he was scheduled to make. We saw the writing on the wall then, that the option to release him was much more palatable with a lower cap hit, not a guarantee for his return.

As it were, their first option was to trade him, and they couldn't find a taker. So the Ochocinco reality show will take its show elsewhere. Where is anyone's guess.
