The New England Patriots have retained one of the top tackles in the NFL on Sunday when they agreed to a four-year contract with RT Sebastian Vollmer, a staple of the team’s offensive line since they drafted him in the second round (58th overall) back in 2009. No word on the dollar amount just yet, but it will likely be around the four-year, $36 million tag given to OL Jake Long, considered the best lineman on the market, earlier this week. Vollmer has started 44 of 51 regular season games and all five game postseason games he’s been active for the Patriots. The tackle also joins Matt Light and Rob Gronkowski as the only second round picks under Bill Belichick to sign a second contract with the team. The year’s tackle market is quite thin in free agency and, despite Vollmer’s ability on the line, it appears that other teams might have been scared away from a long-term commitment to the German lineman because of his history of health issues. Vollmer had he knee scoped after this season and has had some issues with his back, but apparently Belichick & Co. feel confident about his recovery. If Vollmer can stay healthy, this should wind up a steal for the Patriots in the long-term.
