The New England Patriots announced the release of linebacker Shawn Crable yesterday, brining to an end a career that never even started with the Patriots after two injury marred seasons. Crable was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list along with two other players on Tuesday, and then a day later released altogether.

Crable was drafted by the Patriots in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft, and many had high hopes for the former Michigan standout. As a rookie in 2008, Crable was listed among the inactive players for the first eight games before landing on season-ending injured reserve (shin). Last season, he was placed on season-ending injured reserve at the start of the season (groin).

At 6-foot-5, 243 pounds, Crable certainly looked like the complete package for a linebacker in the mold of Willie McGinest for Bill Belichick’s complex system, but never appeared in a regular season game as a Patriot. The New England Patriots will take to the practice fields behind Gillette Stadium in Foxboro for the first official practice of training camp today.
