On the crucial play of the Patriots 24-20 loss to the Giants, it was a very surprising player who figured prominently. When QB Eli Manning found TE Jake Ballard for the one-yard TD with 19 seconds left, special teamer Tracy White was in coverage. On a 28-yarder over the middle on the final drive, Ballard beat White, too. Why was White, who had played only a handful of plays on defense this season, on the field? Turns out, with injuries to LB Brandon Spikes and LB Gary Guyton, he was, simply, left. “It is pretty tough,” White said. “We were up with the game on the line and seconds to go.  We have to execute the plays a little better.” As for being on the field in the final moments, White said he wasn’t nervous. Sure, it speaks to the troubling depth problems. But asked if he was ready, White said, “We practiced the plays, I know the plays and everything. It wasn’t nothing to really think about.
