In a pretty surprising move on Saturday, the Patriots dealt Jeff Demps and a seventh round pick to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in exchange for running back LeGarrette Blount. The Patriots had been fielding offers for the 23-year old Demps ever since he announced that he would be leaving the team to focus on his track & field career, saying he hoped to join the team midway through the upcoming season. The Pats wanted a full commitment from the Olympic sprinter, but he was apparently unwilling. No word on if Tampa Bay plans to allow him to split time between sports. The 26-year old Blount, who has 1939 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns in three NFL seasons, became an expendable piece for Tampa with the emergence of rookie running back Doug Martin in the backfield last season. It’s not a bad swap for the Patriots, who add Blount’s big frame (and his $1.25 million salary) to their backfield in exchange for a big question mark on their roster. It is pretty disappointing that we’ll never get to see an Olympic sprinter return kicks for the home team in Foxboro, though.
