The Patriots got offseason steals with Andre Carter and Marc Anderson last offseason. They coached up two cheap free agent acquisitions in their scheme and they combined for 20 sacks. However, since they were signed to just 1 year deals, both are now gone. The Patriots drafted two defensive ends in Chandler Jones and Jake Bequette, but they probably don’t want to start just two rookies at the position this year.
According to Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe, they could get a similar breakout season from free agent acquisition Trevor Scott. They’d really like that to be happen as they need a veteran pass rusher at the position. Scott has 13.5 career sacks in 4 season as a situational pass rusher, which doesn’t suggest much, but the Patriots have coached up similar type players before. Scott could be the week 1 starter opposite Chandler Jones so we’ll just have to see what happens.
