With DE/OLB Derrick Burgess contemplating retirement at an already thin position for the Patriots, the team has begun looking for outside help. Earlier today it was reported that the Patriots worked out former Bears DE Adewale Ogunleye. Pats fans may better remember Ogunleye from his time in Miami where he started his NFL career. Ogunleye, who will turn 33 soon, is an effective pass rusher and finished last season with 6.5 sacks. He would have to make the switch from DE to OLB in the Pats’ 3-4, much like Burgess had to do last season. At 6′4″ and 260 lbs, he has the size to make the switch. If the Patriots are seriously contemplating bringing in Ogunleye, the sooner they get him in camp the better. Burgess joined the team late last summer and didn’t start looking comfortable at OLB until the end of last season, so the sooner Ogunleye can get into camp the sooner he can get comfortable standing up out of the three-point stance.
Anything and anyone would be a help at this point. The Pats need big-time pass-rush help, and Ogunleye may help answer some of the questions there while rookie Jermaine Cunningham develops. The Pats have two roster spots open at the moment so they can bring in Ogunleye and not have to cut anybody. We should find out whether Ogunleye will be joining the team some time over the next few days.
