Mike Patterson ready to play against Saints
The Philadelphia Eagles defense needs help in the worst way. And come Monday night in New Orleans, DT Mike Patterson, may be able to provide some needed pass rush to help collapse the pocket against the Saints.
According to a report by Philly.com’s Marc Narducci, Patterson says he’s ready to go for the first time this season after brain surgery in January. Patterson initially experienced a seizure during training camp in 2011 that was diagnosed as cerebral arteriovenous malfunction, but he was able to play in 15 regular season games. He was cleared to participate in training camp this year, but was placed on the non-football injury list. After returning to practice Oct. 22, Patterson feels he’s now ready to contribute.
If Patterson is indeed added to the 53-man roster, someone will have to be released to make room. The line rotation hasn’t gotten consistent, disruptive pressure on opposing quarterbacks and the Eagles are now last in the league in sacks with just 9. Derek Landri and Cullen Jenkins have been subpar providing the up-the-middle push, but neither is going anywhere. But Phillip Hunt has been a bust at DE, after an impressive preseason and may be on his way out. Patterson will have to be eased into the rotation and get in game shape before he can make a significant impact.
Whatever decision is made, hopefully Patterson, who was the Eagles 1st-round pick in 2005, can be a veteran leader this defense desperately needs.
