Found March 12, 2012 on Waiting For Next Year: Yardbarker Blogger Network
Since the Browns were unable to secure the second pick in trade talks from over the weekend with the St. Louis Rams, we’ve slowly been piecing things together as to how it all went down. For a while there were conspiracy theories that the Browns offered just as many picks, but the Rams decided to go with the Redskins’ bounty. That didn’t make sense because the Browns have higher picks and more immediate returns with Atlanta’s pick in the 2012 draft. Yesterday we learned that the Browns might not have actually offered the third first rounder that had been initially reported. Now with Peter King’s article this morning, we have yet another piece of information as to why the Browns maybe didn’t offer the extra pick that might have won the bidding war. The Rams might have gotten more by telling the Browns what Washington’s offer was, but Snead had promised each side he wouldn’t play one bid against another but rather simply ask for each team’s best offer. Once Washington’s offer was bett...

Report: Browns “not players” for Matt Flynn

According to New Era Scouting’s Matt Miller, the Browns won’t be pursuing Matt Flynn when free agency hits later this afternoon- “Hearing from two sources that #Browns are not players for Matt Flynn. Take it for what’s its worth.” The teams that are ‘in’ on Flynn according to Miller are Seattle and Miami- “More Matt Flynn news, apparently Seattle and Miami are...

Hillis drama continues into free agency

Say this for Peyton Hillis: His saga has been as consistently bizarre this offseason as it was during the 2011 season. The end result: Barring a late surprise, Hillis will test his value on the free agent market before deciding if he wants to return to the Cleveland Browns. Then its up to the Browns to decide if they want him back, how much they want to pay him and whether his...

Report: Peyton Hillis to meet with Steelers

According to a report by Tony Grossi the Steelers are expected to meet with Peyton Hillis today at 4 pm for the start of Free Agency.  Take it for what it is worth.  This would be huge for the Steelers if it is true.  Hillis was a beast before his injury and would fit in perfectly with the Steelers.  He brings a presence of toughness to the offense that we have been lacking....

Browns crawl into free agency

The Cleveland Browns have released starting right tackle Tony Pashos, one of several moves made as NFL free agency opened. The club also tendered wide receiver Jordan Norwood and defensive lineman Brian Schaefering and signed backup offensive lineman John Greco to a contract extension on Tuesday. Punter Richmond McGee, who spent most of last season on injured reserve, was also released...

Browns quarterback options dwindling, Matt Flynn or Ryan Tannehill?

If the Cleveland Browns are truly looking to replace Colt McCoy as starting quarterback the options are thinning rather rapidly. After losing out in the Robert Griffin III lottery along with speculation of Peyton Manning going to the Denver Broncos or Arizona Cardinals, the Browns must look elsewhere--possibly Matt Flynn or Ryan Tannehill. Aside from Manning, Flynn is considered...

Free Agent Outlook: LB's and DB's

The Browns invested heavily in CB's Joe Haden and Sheldon Brown, as they have with LB's D'Qwell Jackson and Chris Gocong. With questionable depth, the Browns may not be in position to acquire a starter quality player at the positions of note, and the organization is still sniffing around QB options.

What it really would have cost the Browns to land RG3 in Cleveland

If Robert Griffin III had been coming out last year with the same perceived value as he has entering this year’s draft, and the price would have been the Browns’ 2011 first-rounder (the sixth overall pick) plus the next year’s first-round pick, the trade would have been a no-brainer. Yet when accounting for last year’s draft day trade with the Atlanta Falcons, that’s essentially...

Cleveland Browns re-sign Alex Smith to a one-year deal

Cleveland Browns re-signed tight end Alex Smith to a one-year contract Tuesday afternoon, according to Akron Beacon Journal’s Nate Ulrich. Drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the third round of the 2005 NFL Draft, the six-year veteran has spent the last two seasons with the Browns after sign one-year contracts both years, after playing [...]

First things first for the Cleveland Browns free agency

A lot of the talk about the Cleveland Browns over the past few days has been about the NFL draft and not getting Robert Griffin III. The only problem is free agency is what the Browns need to be worried about next as it starts on March 13th at 4PM eastern. A large part of what will happen in the NFL draft on April 26th will be dictated by what needs the Cleveland Browns can fill...

NFL Free Agency: Browns interested in DE Jeremy Mincey

The Browns shouldn’t want to waste any time finding someone to play opposite Jabaal Sheard on the defensive line. According to reports out of Chicago and re-broadcast by the Plain Dealer, the Browns are looking at Jeremy Mincey most recently from the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mincey had 8 sacks, 4 forced fumbles and an interception in 2011 for the Jaguars. It was his fourth year in...

For Browns QB spot, desire can’t create opportunity

Regardless of how exactly the process went down this past weekend, the Browns missed their man. What isn’t in question is that the Browns wanted RG3 on the team and he will not be. So like any good co-dependent fanbase, we scour the earth to figure out who we can count on to be the quarterback to take the Browns to the Super Bowl. When one door closes another one opens. Usually...

Browns Sign TE Alex Smith, OL John Greco

The Browns signed tight end Alex Smith to a one-year contract, his agent Kevin Robinson announced on Twitter and the team announced that it had extended offensive lineman John Greco. Smith was one of eight Browns free agents to hit the market, but signed shortly thereafter. Smith started four of 14 games with the Browns last season, catching 14 passes for 131 yards and one TD. The...

Browns Free Agent RB Peyton Hillis Will Visit The Chiefs

Browns running back Peyton Hillis will visit the Chiefs, a source told the Plain Dealer today. In Kansas City, Hillis would play for former Browns coach Romeo Crennel. If all goes well on his visit, Hillis could sign quickly. Hillis has said he'd like to remain in Cleveland, but it remains to be seen if the Browns will try to re-sign him. Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer ...
