When last we left local quasi-man, Peter King, he was detailing his love of wunderkinds, a true rarity because society typically shuns people with vision and useful ideas. John Harbaugh told Peter that a Harbaugh Bowl was a triumph for the American Dream because his grandparents were immigrants. Previous to this year, all Super Bowl coaches were Native Americans. PK started bemoaning the sad state of minority coaching hires in the league before torpedoing his own point by carping that no team gave Mike Zimmer a head coaching position.
Over the weekend, The Onion poked fun at PK’s special brand of self-involved **********. Rest assured, we saw it and applaud their efforts. Peter tried to take the ribbing with good humor on Twitter, but you can tell he was shamed because there’s no travel griping in this week’s column. Thanks for the reprieve, fellow satirists.
But what about this week? You may surprised to learn that there is tons of media at the Super Bowl. I know! SHOCKVILLE! Will...

The San Francisco 49ers' former starting quarterback Alex Smith is expected to seek his release before free agency, according to Pro Football Talk.
Smith, who lost the starting job to Colin Kaepernick in Week 10, would prefer to be released so he can garner the full benefits of free agency, the report says.
The 49ers aren't likely to release Smith because of his value in...
Unless Alex Smith has to relieve Colin Kaepernick in Super Bowl XLVII this Sunday, the former No. 1 overall pick has likely played his last game with the 49ers.
Now, San Francisco has to pick between trading Smith and his $8.5 million contract, or releasing him. The quarterback would prefer the latter.
Smith will ask for his release before the start of free agency, March 12, according...
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports that a source with knowledge of the situation has informed him that 49ers backup QB Alex Smith is expected to ask for his release before the start of free agency in March.
Florio adds that Smith could miss out on his $8.5 million salary for the 2013 season in the hope of securing a better deal and a starting job in the NFL.
Smith, 28, is...
Nobody will be surprised if Alex Smith won’t be back with the 49ers next season. The franchise now undoubtedly belongs to Colin Kaepernick, who has taken Smith’s starting job and presumably also his parking spot.
Whether Smith’s exit (if it does indeed happen) in the offseason comes via a trade or the team releasing him is still TBD. But according to Pro Football Talk, Smith...
Rather than waiting to be traded in the offseason, wrongly shelved quarterback Alex Smith will reportedly request the San Francisco 49ers to release him before the start of free agency. After getting concussed in November, 2011 AP NFL Coach of the Year Jim Harbaugh sandbagged the 28-year-old Smith and inserted Colin Kaepernick as the team’s permanent replacement under center. The...
Word is out that 49ers quarterback Alex Smith is asking for his release from the team. The news comes from Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com. The news comes as no surprise, and I wouldn't be surprised to see the 49ers grant his request.I wrote last week about how the Chiefs should go after Smith. But if Smith opts for free agency, that could open up things a bit. You'll...
(Eds: APNewsNow. Will be updated. With AP Photos.) By JANIE McCAULEY AP Sports Writer Alex Smith ran off the field at Candlestick Park two weeks ago to a standing ovation and cheers from the sellout crowd, not so much different from the reception last January when he took the San Francisco 49ers oh so close to a Super Bowl.
Now relegated to a backup role with the NFC champions,...
When Colin Kaepernick took over as the San Francisco 49ers
starting quarterback earlier this season and went on to show his ability, it
was widely expected that the team would trade Alex Smith over the offseason. However,
Smith is expected to seek his release before the start of the free agency
period, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.
But the player prefers not...
After being usurped as the 49ers starting quarterback by Colin Kaepernick this season, rumors have swirled that Alex Smith wants out of San Francisco. It appears the Niners will grant him that wish.
NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported via Twitter on Tuesday that the 49ers will attempt to trade Smith after their season ends this Sunday, and if that proves unsuccessful he will be respectfully...
I understand it is a business, but the 49ers should do what is best for Alex Smith. This wasn’t a Drew Bledsoe situation where the team was 0-2, Bledsoe gets hurt for a long period of time and Brady came in and saved the day. Alex Smith was playing well, the 49ers were winning and he only missed one week.
He has been a model teammate throughout the entire situation, so if he wants...
There’s not one topic I feel like talking about today as we endure a week of Super Bowl and Hall of Fame propoganda. The Browns introduced their defensive coordinator Ray Horton yesterday, but even that was putting a cap on old news. With that in mind, I thought I would just combine a bunch of things into one post today…
Alex Smith to the Browns?
So Brandon Weeden thought he...
Alex Smith ran off the field at Candlestick Park two weeks ago to a standing ovation and cheers from the sellout crowd, not much different from the reception last January when he took the 49ers oh so close to a Super Bowl. Now relegated to a backup role with the NFC champions, Smith's trip to the Big Easy this week leading up to Sunday's Super Bowl against Baltimore is hardly...
Alex Smith has been a good teammate despite being demoted this season, so the 49ers reportedly will try to treat him well in return.
Smith had a good season for San Francisco before being replaced as the team’s starting quarterback after being concussed during a Week 10 tie against St. Louis. Colin Kaepernick replaced him, led the team to the Super Bowl, and has clearly emerged...
Some people already believe Baltimore Ravens safety Ed Reed could be lured away by the New England Patriots in free agency this offseason.
Peter King of SI.com indicated tonight that the Ravens will likely let safety Ed Reed test the free agent market and that the Patriots are a viable option.
Reed has already indicated that he doesn’t plan on retiring after this season. It will...
Here’s another installment of speculative trade ideas for Jets CB Darrelle Revis.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter joined SPN Radio Tuesday morning and tossed out a speculative trade idea that would involve the Jets sending Revis to the San Francisco 49ers in return for QB Alex Smith and a second round pick, per Jane McManus.
There’s no question that the Jets could use quarterback and...
