Peter Konz had his proverbial baptism by fire as a rookie when he started 12 games at right guard for the Atlanta Falcons. Now that he's the starting center following the retirement of Todd McClure, Konz should be grateful for the experience when Atlanta opens the regular season Sept. 8 at New Orleans. There's still much to learn, particularly in making the right calls to keep quarterback Matt Ryan upright and clear space for running back Steven Jackson. Konz, a second-round draft pick last year, was a three-year starting center at Wisconsin, but the Falcons slid him in at right guard when Garrett Reynolds suffered a season-ending back injury. Coach Mike Smith says Konz did his job well enough that the Falcons never hesitated to make him the starting center.

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- After participating in the first two days of practice, Tony Gonzalez departed training camp. Will Steven Jackson Improve Atlanta’s Ground Game?

Steven Jackson Twitter Page (@sj39) The Atlanta Falcons did something in 2012 they hadn’t been able to do in previous seasons since drafting Matt Ryan, win a playoff game. Umenyiora loving life in Atlanta

Ask Osi Umenyiora about playing in Atlanta, and the Falcons' new defensive end smiles instantly. Umenyiora says it's a blessing that he spent 10 years with New York, helped the Giants win two Super Bowls. The Atlanta Falcons Don't Need To Be Infected With the Shawne Merriman Crazy

Let's set the record straight. Shawne Merriman is the one campaigning for the Atlanta Falcons to give him a close look, the team has expressed no real interest in him to this point. That said, this one just needs to float away on the raft of nonsense to end up on the island of misfit tweets. The Falcons have done a superb job of drafting and picking up free agents that are high character, low

Tony Gonzalez will miss an extended period of time during the Falcons training camp. He will be ready, don’t worry.

Tony Gonzalez won’t be in camp but that doesn’t mean the big man won’t be ready once the 2013 season gets under way. Gonzalez is better than most and missing time in camp isn’t going to hurt the Falcons at all. Gonzalez knows what his job is and he knows how to get it done in game time situations. Most players wish they could perform on the field the way Gonzalez does. He...

Falcons' White knows 1,000 yards is new standard

Roddy White knows better than most how the Atlanta Falcons' expectations have changed. White, a first-round pick in 2005, launched his NFL career when Atlanta had never managed back-to-back winning seasons. Only one Atlanta receiver, Andre Rison, had posted three straight 1,000-yard seasons. It's a new era in Atlanta. The Falcons are working to extend a streak of five straight...
