When I wed my beautiful bride nearly a decade ago, I married into her rabid fanaticism for the Denver Broncos. I have adopted the team as my own. But never in our eight year marriage have both of us been so unexcited about an upcoming season at Mile High Stadium.

Peyton Manning is just not our guy.

I know he had a stellar career with the Indianapolis Colts, a Super Bowl champion, multiple Pro Bowls, league MVPs; the list of accolades goes on and on. Plus, he is a likeable guy.

Even likeable guys, though, become annoying when they appear in every other commercial during NFL games. From hawking Gatorade to Sprint to DirecTV, Manning is more overexposed than the Kardashian clan.

An even bigger concern is his ongoing health and readiness. He's 36 years old. That's enough to make you worry right there. Then you add that Manning has had at least three surgical procedures on his neck, including a cervical neck fusion, and it's clear that there's cause for concern.

If I were Manning, I would have retired. You've secured your legacy. You're a lock on the Hall of Fame. Hang up your cleats and enjoy life. Manning is obviously too competitive for that. His brother, Eli Manning, with two Super Bowl rings, has upped the ante on his older sibling.

Yet is sibling rivalry a reason to sacrifice safety? One big hit and Manning's career and health could be sacked for good. My wife and I aren't sure that was a wise risk for Manning or the Broncos to take.

I get that Tim Tebow was not John Elway's style. As executive vice president of football operations for Denver, Elway was more uncomfortable with Tebow than a nun at a nude beach. Tebow was winning though, and bringing some excitement back to Sports Authority Field. Nevertheless, if not Tebow, than make a play for Robert Griffin III, or give backup quarterback Brady Quinn a shot.

Obviously, Elway doesn't take relationship advice from me and my wife and he went all-in for Manning. Instead of building a winning legacy over time, he went for instant gratification.

If Manning and the Broncos isn't a marriage made in playoff heaven, I may be inclined, at least from my team, to ask for a divorce.
